Well, it does take time, but my suggestion is if you have an accoustic guitar, practice with that for a while. It really builds finger strenth.
I know this might sound wierd, but if you practice a lot, you start to get callouses on your finger tips. Sounds gross but it isnt, it just makes your finger tips a little harder and less squishy, you wont even feel it when you play:P .
And if you start to cut your fingers just super glue the cuts and continue playing. But yah, it does start to hurt after awhile. There's been times that I've been on stage and just want to stop mid-show cause I can't pull off bar chords anymore... but the show must go on.
Once I just met this guy, and I picked up his first guitar and started playing and they were looking in amazement... and I thought it was because they were amazed at my playing... but no, they were staring at my strumming hand cause I cut it while playing and I was spraying blood all over his guitar. His white pick guard is now orange. I didn't notice til I was done playing... he still has it... and we're friends now... but it was kind of awkward then since we didn't know each other that well.
