Don't know what's your college's reason is but my teachers said it's to predict and decide what level you'll be doing in the real exam.

iv done 2 now... in so happy. i did them. i was gna stay in bed today n go into to the toilets n lock ma self away :( but i thought oh ged on with it ull hav to do it anyway. i dint understand anything either coz sum stuff wasnt relevant to what we r doin... grr lol
