Dont make an elf O_O they start in a agiant tree like 1000 miles away from ironforge (the place with the auctions house, basically the thriving heart onf the alliance) and if your in the U.S....go to lothar! ;)

You've obviously not heard about patch 1.9 :P

In patch 1.9 darnassus, ironforge, stormwind will all have linked AHs as will undercity, orgrimmar and thunder bluff.

Also gadgetzan and booty bay will have linked AHs
