OK, I was at a party last night and I was just talking to my friends about cars when the topic somehow changed to "cousins" (I hate when topics change like that :P) and then one of my friends mentioned, well what if your cousins had a child? What do you call it technically apart from your name and cousin's child? Anyway it kinda turned into an argument. :P I didn't know what it was called so I said I'd either call the child my 'cousin's child' or by its name. But in forms of family relation technicality, I have no clue, like with my cousin, you call them by their name, and your cousin, which you don't have to use often unless you're saying "Hey Jane, this is my cousin, ____" and so on...

My friend did end up coming one thing which I disagree about. He said you call the child your "2nd cousin". I disagree with this because your cousin is related to you by your parent's sibling's child, which makes that child your cousin, and their parents your uncle and aunty. I always assumed 2nd cousin was the 2nd oldest cousin in your family too, which you obviously don't mention but just call them your cousin, but in forms of technicality, it's your 2nd cousin. Anyway if you call your cousin's child your "2nd cousin", how the hell can it be your "2nd cousin", when the parent is your cousin but not your uncle/aunty? :s

Can someone help me here? This is too confusing -.- And now I've got this stuck in my head. :P

I've always called my cousins kids my 2nd cousins. Lmao, I don't know. It's never been quite right to me. They aren't directly related anymore I don't think so it's like.. not a relative? -shrug-

Your cousin's kid is your nephew. Period. No stipulations, no special frases, no nothing. ;)

Ur cousins kid actually isnt related to you.. my cousin just had a baby and i just tend to call her my cousin anyway. Btw i always thought ur nephew had to be the offspring of your brother/sister?

Yes that's correct about the child of your brother and site being your nephew/neice.

Well its different where I come from, I come from Sri Lanka (though I was born in the US) and in Sri Lanka when you walk down the street you're related to everyone rofl. And even if you're not related you call each other uncle and aunty. So basically, anyone that is of any relation to you in the generation one generation younger than you is your nephew/niece. For example, if your 552nd cousin has a kid, that kid is your nephew/niece. Also, you're 552nd cousin is regarded as your cousin. Its strange but I've gotten used to it ;P

Your cousins child is your second cousin...
If you have a child then your child and your cousins child become third cousins.

Its not your nethew or niece, thats when your brother or sister has a child...
Then if you have a child your brother/sisters child and your child become first cousins...

That would be your first cousin... your fathers brother is your uncle. His son is your cousin... his brother is also your cousin ;\
Trust me, i did this recently in socialogy.

Cousin - your aunt/uncles child.
2nd Cousin - your aunt/uncles granchild
Aunt/Uncle - your parents brother or sister

I just call my second cousins my cousins anyway, it makes it less confusing for little kids. :p

You're right, I believe you. It's left me wondering with though, why would you call someone your 2nd cousin when a cousin defines the child of your uncle and aunty? Blah, English can be so strange. :)
