Do you like your favourite band going mainstream? I mean, sometimes it's annoying, for instance Fall Out Boy. I heard Sugar, We're Going Down yonks ago, and have liked them ages, now everyone knows all the words. More decent bands are getting mainstream these days, and sure it's good for the band, but personally it annoys me.

One of my favourite bands, The Used are in the perfect situation, they're not mainstream, but they still get sellout concerts, and their name in Kerrang!

Opinions.

It blow big time, I like some bands when hardly anyone knows about them. But then everyone does and you start to go off them a bit. And you start to hear the songs loads and it just annoys you when ever you hear them

I hate it when people take bands for a single song, and dont bother listening to anything else by them, unless it gets popular. Like Best Of You by Foo Fighters. That is the worst song that they have ever made, but the people who like it dont listen to anything else by them, and people who hate it dont even bother listening to anything else. Its lose-lose.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It's happened to so many. P!ATD, Arctic Monkeys, Green Day etc

I'd say Kerrang is pretty mainstream anyway-

I dont have a problem with any of my favourite bands going mainstream, so long as they dont delibaretly sell out and change to suit their listeners, real musicians play not just to make a living.

Theyve only had one album havent they? They havent gone anywhere, if they are mainstreem now, they were mainstreem then.

A lot of people like it when a band they like that no one has ever heard of. I can think of a lot of bands that would be very popular if they were just put on the radio waves. But I like it when no ones heard of a band I like, its more personal. Like you are one in a few.

But unfortunatly a lot of people also think the oposite. They'll only like a band if they are heard of by EVERYONE, which is how mainstreem starts.

I am personally one of those people who yell 'sell out' at the first sign of a band becomming mainstream and then refuse to listen to them. And i know that probably isnt the best attitude to take concerning bands and music but heh. Bands such as patd, whom I started listening to last June, have always had the potential to be massive, and I knew that. It was just me waiting for the moment they would explode. And now they have... i really can't listen to them anymore. I don't hate the bands when they become big its more the fanbase they gain. The people who suddenly download the album in 20 minutes and then come on the Livejournal community preaching about how they're patds biggest fan and how they have the album before the release date and all that other rubbish. I do suppose this makes me snobby concerning music, but i'm really not bothered.
When bands go big it's not their music I begin to hate, it's the fanbase which leads to them over-analysing songs and band members and then i gradually hate them... if that made no sense, i apologise. It's 3am and im tired lmaoo. xD

Ew. Mainstream.

It's probably one of the reasons I no longer listen to the radio or listen to rock. :\

How can someone feel unique when they like the same song as thousands of other people for the same reasons?

Electronica is so unique in many ways. For one, it never goes mainstream and there are so many different kinds of electronica. People usually refer to electronica as techno or dance music. They're consdered electronica, but aren't the only categories. Techno-industrial in one of my favorite.

Mainstream gets so boring. Most thems include:
- Girl getting dumped.
- Guy getting dumped.
- Songs about being different and individualism, even though they aren't.

It's just one big, contradictory mess and 80% of the world enjoys it.

That's why i don't listen to the radio. I prefer it when things don't get mainstream, but still do well. It's when people who listen to a song and think they know everything about them that annoys me.

I dont like techno because it all sounds the same. Not to mention the person doesnt really sing, just talks to the computerized beat.

And that isnt mainstream, mainstream isnt a song style. Mainstream are the most popular/bands artists. Techno/electronica could get just as mainstream just as any other band or artist, but it doesnt. For self explanitory reasons.

The same happened with Nirvana. You have people who listen to Smells like teen spirit and Lithium and think they are the world's biggest Nirvana fans... just to fit in with whatever scene.

Yeah, I know people like that. Why is it the most popular song by a band is normally the worst?

It would help if you knew what style of techno I was talking about. You really need to fully explore a vista before you start bashing it. :p

It's not really your clubby, repetative thing you may be familiar with but actually a whole different style than that.

Techno-Industrial actually does contain lyrics words, etc. The themes mostly revolving around TI are mostly contraversial issues and the artist's point of views. It's really interesting.

And because of "self-explanatory" reasons that electronica doesn't normally go mainstream is one of the reasons I tend to enjoy it.

My theory is that the second single on a CD is almost always the best. Because the way it works is the record company decides before the CD comes out what song to make a music video for and what they think the public will like, and most of all, whats a short enough to have a decent spot on the radio. The second single is what the public's favorite of the album is.
