View Full Version : You know, Just chillin, having a bud, breaking the laws of physics... True... True.
Well I was playing around with shapes on Excel making graphs and stuff then it got me thinking... About the laws of physics and area... And all area broke down and re converted should cover the same area right?
For example... If you break down a 32x32 inch square, you'd be able to rebuilt it in a different form but it would not miss any thing out, there would be the exact same ammount of area right?
Well, I did the same with a triangle and I was amazed to find that even though the same are is used, it needs more to complete the triangle.
Can you figure this out? Or have I broke the laws of physics? =P

Girl, boy... Same thing...
Well lets use something simple... Say you have a bar of six chocolate pieces and you layed them out in a row, you would always have the same area when you change it right? You would still have 6 chocolate pieces that cover the same area when broken down.
But this, when the shapes were broken down they cover LESS area in the SAME shape with the same area. Which is really odd.

There are not triangles, infact they are quadrilaterals! If you look ever so closely you will see a slight concave in both triangles. The rate at which they rise will change. The both reach the same points of 5 High and 13 Long but one of them uses on less square too get there (the bottom one). That is as simple as I could put it ;)

Yes indeed, you make presumptions that you do not even though in most cases. You presume that these are of course triangles and they're nothing but triangles and you start too measure out the squares too make sure the litle guy on paint didn't sneakily change one the four shapes too be a square less off!

OK. The thing is - the big triangle is not really a triangle. The smaller ones - red and green - are triangles, but the angle at the bottom left of each triangle is not the same - the red triangle's is a little narrower than the green. So, in the top picture, when you put the red triangle in the lower left corner, then the big shape really has a bit of a "dent" where the two smaller triangles meet - i.e., the line going from the lower left corner to the upper right corner is not really a straight line. And in the bottom picture, there is a bit of a "bump" where the two triangles meet. Not much, but enough to give you room to squeeze another square in there.
How do I know this - well, if you count the squares as if the big shape was really a triangle, you'll see that the area should be 1/2 of 5 (height) x 13 (width), or 32 1/2 square units. If you add up the areas of all the smaller shapes, you get 32 square units on top and 33 square units on the bottom (including the white "hole"). So, the big shape can't really be a triangle.
And to get even more pedantic, for the big shape to be a triangle, the red and green smaller triangles would have to have the same angle in their lower left corner, and if we calculate that angle, we find that they are not the same, so the line in both shapes going from lower left to upper right is not really a straight line, but a "bent" one.
Red Angle = arctangent(3/8) = 20.556 degrees
Green Angle = arctangent(2/5) = 21.801 degrees
Close, but no cigar!
Still a GREAT illusion - I'm sure it drives most people crazy!

You do cover the same area, just in a different way
