I'm looking for a sort of system where users can log in and then I can have a script on the homepage which shows them online-It's like a sort of staff system and i'm trying to create a support site so all I need is to show what support officers are online-I don't really need anything else in the panel-

Yeah, you could, then use the news tutorial to allow users to submit message, then admins reply, delete and all.

TechTuts, is good, too critiscise other peoples PHP work you need to know PHP.
If you read up on php for a few days you could easily mod it to your needs.
