It is a terrible disaster which has killed 23,000.

Sadly, yes, I heard. The numbers are rising in deaths. They expect even more drastic weather.

Was it like a freak weather condition like when there was a mini-tornado in Lincolnshire or was it a normal tsunami.

Its a shame that so many people lost there homes and lives, i find it quite upsetting finding about mass loads of people dieing

it was an eartquake were the Eurasian plate and Indian plate meet. The tsunami was so strong it destroyed fishing ports in Africa! So far there are 23,000 peeps dead and rising. 12 british are dead. :(

It was only a few months ago since the tornado in the Carribean.

From what i can make out, it was a realy powerful earth quake, 8.3 of somthing, wich devistted near by arias, and caused the tusamis to hit other arias thuther away. im not yet shore why theres so much focus on the tusmi condisring itsthe earth uke that killed most the peopel?

Sadly the death toll has reached 60,000 - 70,000

24 people uot of that are britions.

Plus half of the people killed were children.

It is said that Indonesia to be the worst affected with 20,000 deaths
then sri lanka being next with around 15,000.

Yeah This is a terrible disaster that has really shook are world. Thankfully there are hundreds of planes nationwide deliverying supplies and the Uk has put 15 million for aid. Its so sad that over a million people are now homeless and thousands are still missing. Even worse that half of these are kids. Lets Pray that the toll doesnt rise anymore, and bless the victims and there grieving families.

This is the 5th worst natural disaster in the world so far, following the chinease Yangtze river floods and Bangladesh and North Vietnam floods.

Death toll is now 100,000, there is lots of little islands around thailand etc isn't there, I bet the waves probabaly washed right over them!

I was watching the news, as you do, and there was a little boy being reunited with his dad, he was found on the roadside badly bitten by mosquitos, it was good, but also sad, as his mum was missing, I'm sure there's so many situations like that, I'd hate to be there, or lose one of my family.

My dad told me, and I'm not sure how true this is, that the Earth has supposadly moved 1 inch from its general rotation of the sun.

1 inch may not be that much, but it shows how big the tsunami/earthquake was if it can move the Earth 1 inch!

Ocean disaster toll hits 114,000

The hunt for survivors is drawing to a close
New figures reveal at least 114,000 people died in Sunday's ocean disaster, as aid agencies struggle to provide relief to the Indian Ocean region.

Officials in Indonesia say the number killed there is now nearly 80,000 and the death toll from the worst-hit area is set to rise still higher.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said the disaster was unprecedented and required an unprecedented response.

The entire UN family was ready to help people rebuild their lives, he said.

Millions who survived the waves now have little water, food or shelter.

Relief teams and supplies are pouring into the region but have yet to reach the hardest-hit and most remote areas.

There are reports of desperate people fighting over aid. Aftershocks and fears of new tsunamis have sown panic among survivors in Indonesia and India.

Across the region thousands remain unaccounted for since the 9.0 magnitude undersea earthquake off Sumatra that forced a wall of water smashing into coastlines as far away as east Africa.

The US, Australia, Japan and India have formed a coalition to provide relief.

The World Bank has announced that it is giving $250m to help victims while the UK increased its contribution to $96m, making it the biggest donation from an individual country.

World's worst disasters

They explained that the figure had jumped by more than 20,000 after large numbers of bodies were found on Sumatra's remote north-west coast, the area of land closest to the epicentre of the earthquake that triggered the waves.

Government institutions in the region have collapsed and fuel supplies have almost run out, officials said.

The BBC's Andrew Harding in Banda Aceh says relief supplies are barely trickling into the city where drinking water is also scarce and corpses clog the streets.

A logistical nightmare awaits the massive aid operation, he says.

There are reports of fighting among survivors over food in the city.

"There is no food here whatsoever. We need rice. We need medicine. I haven't eaten in two days," a local woman told Reuters news agency.

Indian officials issued a warning, prompting many people to flee coastal areas both in southern India and Sri Lanka.

Officials of the World Health Organization say as many as five million people are at risk throughout the region because they are unable to get water, food or adequate sanitation.

Several countries have seen their infrastructure shattered; countless roads and bridges have been swept away.

Stockpiles of supplies have begun to mount at some airports and distribution centres, where airlifts of aid have been held up by a shortage of helicopters.

The UN's relief co-ordinator, Jan Egeland, has said it will take another "two or three days" for the relief effort to get into full swing - by which time it may be too late for tens of thousands of people.

"We are doing very little at the moment," he said.

"I believe the frustration will be growing in the days and weeks ahead."

There are fears that epidemics will erupt because water supplies have been contaminated.

lol nah i have more to say than that.Short Story.My mum's a travel agent and she was on the phone to one of her customers who didn't enjoy his holiday.she was organising his refund when he came out and said "i know i have some money due to me but can you possibly organise it so that the money goes to the Earthquake Aid support Fund.I'm leaving it there.I have enough but there are people out there that have lost their families so let them have the money."
which just goes to show that there ARE decent people in this world.The Death toll is rapidly rising out there and i felt helpless so when i go back to school,im going to organise a charity event with my friends that will raise money,then we're going to send it to the Earthquake Aid thingy.

I really feel awful about this. The lastest death toll I've heard is 80,000 people. I saw a new video that came up on the news which had a few 5-6 year old kids who were just playing at the beach when all of a sudden the tsunami came, they ended up being swept up by the waves. Another video I saw was at the place where they had all the dead people. All their arms and legs were jagged because they died like that and then their bodies stiffened. This is an awful way that people have to celebrate the new year.

It's nice to know that people are helping out. You will find information on the news about donating money to go towards helping people who survived the tsunami.

My family was there and I lost alot of them :( Its a terrible thing guys, trust me. Millions of people are homeless. The death toll is over 225,000 and many ppl are gonna die of disease. And think about all the people who lived but lsot their family. Thats probably even worse than dying, to lose everyone you loved. Its a heart rendering thing, its really too bad things like this have to happen

Yes, however destructive it was amazing it knocked the earth an inch off it's axis causing loss of sunlight. That is an unbelievable amount of power. Sadly it had to hit somewhere. Immense power. Apparently a scientist had predicted this to happen. He siad they where due a big shudder becuase nothing had happened there for a while no one would listen... And in hawaii is the most suffisticated earthquake detection equipment they felt it 3 hours before it hit, but it was christmas day and no one was there to tell. :'(
