RF, The story so far
Belico sat on his golden throne, stroking his magical axe. He was pleased when he roved his thumb ever so gently upon the blade and a trickle of his own blood rolled down his hand. He smiled a vicious grin and stood, as though to speak. The demons of fire within the room stood to attention and waited with baited breath. The god stamped his long axe handle on the floor with a resounding clank.

“The time has come, my loyal demons. Go out into the realm. Bring me servants to work in my palace. Bring me slaves to build my wall. Bring me men to fight my war!”

The demons cheered and marched out of the throne room. There were about twenty or so that were Belico’s finest and they had their own small army of powerful demons and a larger force of evil men. This militia marched on Memerake with unrelenting force, will and cruelty, the likes of which had never been seen in Platania. Belico’s war was swift and he covered his land in darkness. Young women were captured for him in his palace, mothers and children were taken to work, strong lads and men began work on his great project, the wall of Exfeny, to keep his populace in. For a few weeks he managed to travel, spreading violence and terror throughout Memerake, killing the civilians who cowered before him.

But there were some who resisted. For once Belico had been a kind god, and he had put in place a regent, some might call him a king. But when this man saw what Belico did to his subjects, he fled the palace to gather supporters. King Aranel of Memerake marched to the palace with well over three thousand men, gathered from the towns and villages of Memerake. Men who had seen the destruction and wanted to fight for the freedom of those who still had it. Some had been his lords and knights, good warriors. Others were mere farm folk or peasants who had taken up swords. But all were brothers in arms.

And he was met by Belico and his demons on a field only a few leagues from the beautiful building.

Belico charged at the fore of his hundreds of demons. An outsider might think five hundred versus three thousand would be an easy victory, but every demon had a devilish glint in his eye and carried a heavy axe. Their scaly skin creasing under their black armour. And there Aranel saw Belico, a head taller than his demons, a flaming shadow. He was the pure depiction of evil, holding his long double headed axe. And Belico looked upon the king with eyes of pure hatred. He was a few yards away and he stepped forward. Aranel stepped forward, raising his sword.

The fighting warriors cleared a circular space; on one side was the god, ten feet in height. Menacing and fearful, he stood holding his axe and wearing not full armour, but just a breastplate and kilt, leaving out arm and leg guards. And on the other side, the hero. Aranel stood four feet shorter than the god, in silver armour. He raised his shield and brought his sword to. Belico grinned and launched himself forward. He raised his axe and brought it smashing down, but Aranel ducked under his shield. It was an attack of amazing force and Aranel felt the axe sink into his shield and his bone shatter.

As Belico tried to pull his axe away, Aranel twisted around and slashed with his sword. It made contact with the deity and slid down his upper arm leaving a bloody gash. The god howled and threw his fist forward with all his strength. Aranel fell back, his shield in Belico’s hand and his sword flew across the space to the edge of the crowd. The god rounded on the human on the floor, but he did not see what had become of the king’s sword.

Behind the two combatants, the king’s brother, Teran, took up his sibling’s sword. Filled with rage, he dived forward and drove the blade up into the god’s thigh. Aranel saw the point come up through the other side. Belico howled in pain and anger, and spun around with his axe, but Teran ducked a little. Instead of being killed, the young man was caught on the top of his head. He fell to the ground, his eyes closed. When Belico turned back, Aranel had disappeared and he spat in disgust.

The battle continued, but the men were easily killed by the fiery, hellish demons. But in the fury of battle, nobody noticed four men, one with a fifth over his shoulder, flee and run over a hill. When the bodies were searched, Aranel, Teran and a few other nobles were not identified, but there were a lot of mutilated bodies. But this news disturbed Belico, and he had the work on Exfeny hurried. But there were great gaps, and one night, five men in the clothes of peasants, but carrying weapons and large packs, fled across the border and into another realm…
