I just read this today, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers recently were told about the similarities between their song 'Mary Jane's Last Dance' and the Red Hot Chili Pepper's new song 'Dani California'. Ill assume that those who care, actually have Dani California, so I'll just post the Tom Petty song.
Mary Jane's Last Dance

While I do think the similarities between the guitar riffs in the beginning/verses is undoubtable, the major differences in the chorus and lyrics would make the case go dead.
Anyway, I dont think he actually will sue (or I hope he wont), I dont think it's Tom Petty's thing. However, if he does, Stadium Arcadium will be pulled from shelves worldwide pending legitimation.

Its Tom Petty, he doesnt need publicity, or money. Again, he hasent sued yet, he has just become aware.
And yes, the most striking similarity is the begining, but as the song goes on it drifts away.

Seems like it at the start, but once he starts singing it doesn't seem like it.

Its a pretty good song as well, I'll say that.
This is how pointless my music knowledge is. Within minutes, I relized I could connect RHCP with Tom Petty-- RHCP toured with Foo Fighters, and David Grohl drummed for Tom Petty & The Heart Breakers before forming Foo Fighters

You can sue for litterally anything, but it doesnt mean you'll win. If he does, most of the blame will go onto John Frusciante, the guitar work is the biggest simmilarity.

theres really no point in him sueing so many artists use similar beats/riffs etc.. in their songs but dont sue each other artists steal other artists tunes and attempt to make them better its part of the buisness :P

The first minute sounds exactly like a slower Dani California with different lyrics.

You're no Angel by Saosin sounds alot like Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana so like alot of bands are influenced by their idols or whatever. I'm talking crap.

Well Nirvana stole many things. Kurt admitted to stealling the riffs of SLTS from "More than a feeling" by Boston. Also Come As You Are was stolen from a band called Killing Joke.

you found it.
I really doubt Tom Petty will sue. I knew I heard that riff from Dani California somewhere and then I realized where when a live band here in town did a Last Dance cover a couple of weeks ago. None the less, good to see that I wasn't the only one that caught it.
A lot of bands use other people's riffs as a sort of tribute cause it's like "we like this band, if you like us go listen to them too." And then there's the bands that use other people's riffs because they're plain uncreative.
if this happens atleast i have the album :)
and ill see them live

I doubt the exact cords are stolen, it just sounds like it. John F. may have stolen the beat but he plays chords that dont even exist sometimes
