I'm not sure if the idea has been mentioned before or not. Perhaps it has in a different fashion.
There have been many times when I've been doing something else while people are talking away at me thinking I'm on Habbo. Sometimes, there can be occasions when you must go attend to something else and are unable to tell people that you'll be away.
My idea is to have a message or icon by the Habbo to let others know the status of the user.
The user can set his/her status to be (1) Away -- the user is away and cannot respond. (2) Busy -- the user is available and online, but he/she does not want to be interrupted. A busy icon may be used to notify others that the user is online, but does not want to be bothered. (3) Idle -- the user has not been active for a specified amount of time. (4) Disconnected -- the user has been disconnected from the service/ Hotel. The user may access this function via a drop-down list below the user's ID. The user's status will also be displayed for their friends on their console.
While the user is away, the user cannot (1) send messages in a room or by console. (2) move inside room. (3) perform any actions [dance, wave, etc.].
So, that's my idea. And while people can usually tell that you're offline, some may think you're ignoring them. It's not a necessity, but its a function for convenience.

It be great if the habbo were to close its eyes to indicate that you are away, even though it does that :P
What I'm saying is that instead of waiting like 15 minuets for your habbo to automatically do that, you can do that in a sinch.
I do know this idea was proposed a long time ago, but like you said "in a different fashion".

lol Yeah, that would be nice.
I was also thinking the whole Habbo could become translucent (like the 'ghost' of a Habbo) when you were away to let everyone know you're not there.
The message (or icon) can also be displayed by your name or even in the place where the HC badge is at.

I think rather than having the full range of messenger program-style status messages, just having one for "BRB" would be quite useful (away, busy and idle all come under this, and when you get disconnected your Habbo leaves the hotel anyway, so you'd just be offline). I think your idea of not being able to move, talk, etc., would be much needed for this to prevent people abusing the feature in some way.
+rep, well thought out.
i did an alt like this a long time ago but only with the console

The reason I suggest the messages is because of different occasions users might face. For example, if a user is in his/her room, making a room, or talking privately with someone else, the Busy status can be used for such occasions. Now, while using this status, the user is mobile and can send and receive messages, however, it is only to indicate that he or she do not want to be disturbed. For this status, I would suggest a more visable kind of alert to let others know the user's status. The Away status (or BRB) will be the full lock on user funcitonality. Because it is assumed the user is away from the computer, the user will become immobile. Oh, and it's come to my attention that we already have an Idle status, which is known as Auto-Kick. :P Totally forgot about that. Now, the Disconnected status is basically to let people know the user is no longer connected to the hotel. This can benefit mainly users in casinos and game rooms. For example, if a dealer or a gamer room owner were to suddenly be disconnected, the people in the room will know because of the 5-second status. Usually when a dealer or game room owner leave the room, people assume they're scamming or something of that sort. Again, all for convenience, none are necessity. xP

Very nice alt, and while the messages will be useful for people on your friend list, the people in a room wil be completely unaware of your status.
But nice alt. ;D

Would be somewhat useful, but the hotel can't actually determine the difference between when you've been disconnected by the server and when you log off yourself, as either way the sending/receiving to and from the habbo servers terminates instantly. Oh, and I apparently have to spread rep, so I'll owe you 'til then ^_^

Well, concerning the Disconnected status, maybe the 5 second status can be applied for whenever a user is disconnected, even if they log off on their own.

How so? Habbo uses the same function for furniture (when you are moving it), and the lag seems to be handled well.
