Another review from me; this time is for The Rakes' Capture/Release (New Version).

Nice.

Congratulations.

'Strasbourg'
The song, named after the French city, appeared on the FIFA 06 soundtrack and was the first single (although the site doesn't say it). A real indie track, this is essential for indie fans. The chorus line "Strasbourg!" is like anthemic or something. 9/10

'Retreat'
More indie greatness - this is what you call brilliant. Hey, I might overuse phrases a bit, but whatever. Reminds me of something, don't know what. 9/10

'22 Grand Job'
The shortest track, at 106 seconds, this was the first song I heard from The Rakes. I liked it instantly, and made me want to hear more songs from them. 9/10

'Open Book'
Nice track, not as good as the others, but still good. The album's unfortunate weak point. 8/10

'The Guilt'
"This is a true story" is the first line, and I don't know if it is. But I know one thing that's true about 'The Guilt' - it's freaking excellent. "THE GUILT WON'T LEAVE MY CIRCULATION..." 10/10

'Binary Love'
Another brilliant track; if this had been a single, I would have wanted the video to have Alan Donohoe (lead singer) to have been like an android or something, because of the lyrics. Pretty emotional when you think about it. 9/10

'We Are All Animals'
Only one word describes this: JESUSCHRISTHOWBLOODYBRILLIANTISTHIS.
No, that's really 7. Which is the track number. Ok... Moving back onto the song, it's slow at the start, but when the chorus comes in, it picks up damn well. Also the longest song, at 4:08. 10/10

'Violent'
Reminiscent of some of the more faster and louder blur songs, like 'We've Got A File On You', and 'Globe Alone'. Tells the story of someone who's violent (hence the trackname), most likely a woman. 9/10

'T Bone'
A 100 second instrumental 'intro' sets the scene for T Bone, which is about a masked robber. Best line of the song is the first one, "To shoot, to kill, I dropped a pill" Rest of the song is great too. 9.5/10

'Terror!'
A mystical track, which has got haunting, daunting lyrics and spooky backing sound effects. A video of this would be, in my mind, most like Franz Ferdinand's "This FFFire", with all the propaganda and stuff. 9/10

'Work, Work, Work, (Pub, Club, Sleep)'
Another single, this song is great too. This song has got oomph, and the guitar and drums before the chorus strikes hard and indicates the song. 9/10

'All Too Human'
The 2006 single, put on the album with its re-release this year, is about relationships, like 'Binary Love' and 'Violent', got many people into The Rakes because most people hadn't heard the first few singles and were like "Hey, this is pretty good." It is too. 9/10

My 2nd review is of a single - Brighton quintet The Maccabees are becoming one of my favourite bands, despite only releasing the singles 'X-Ray (Vision)' and 'Latchmere', the latter which I will review now!

Here's the cover (the different swimhats are for each member of the band)

Sorry about the size: I can't get it any bigger.

So, let's look at this 3-track single!

'Latchmere'
The song is about a London leisure centre, and the lyrics stick with it. Once you hear this, you'll wanna listen to it over and over and over... ad infinitum. And possibly what could become a slogan for the song is the chorus line: "Latchmere's... got a wave machine!" Total brilliance, so good that the single and its B-Sides made it into my iPod Top 25! 10/10

'Bicycles'
Bloody hell, this is great. Surprisingly, the song isn't about bicycles, but trains. Still refers to bicycles though. Whatever, this song is magnificent. 10/10

'Happy Slap'
"Another happy slap... another heart a-ttack" goes the first line. I think this is a nice song, despite the title. Not as good as the others though. 9/10
