How do you know if you got adware?

How do you? Is it when you get a lot of popups? =/ I'm getting awfully a lot of popups lately .. any suggested programs to remove adware? :D Thanks.

My friend Nick suggested I download Ad-Aware SE Personal and it's scanning my computer it the moment, hopefully it'll help stop the pop-ups. :D And I use FireFox, but it won't work with RS. =[ So I'm trying to use internet explorer.
