Quoted from Manutd.com:

The Reds' boss revealed that the club have been in negoiations for Hargreaves' services for the past few weeks. And, according to the boss, the club are closing in on an agreement.

"You can never be confident but we are hopeful," revealed Sir Alex at his pre-match press conference. "We have been trying to negotiate with Bayern Munich for quite a while now, but it's hit a bit of a deadlock.

"Nevertheless, the boy has said he would like to join United and we would like to have him here.

"We are dealing with a big club in Bayern Munich, but the relationship between the two clubs has always been good.

"We were very amenable to them when they wanted to talk to Ruud van Nistelrooy; we actually would have preferred Ruud to join them [instead of Real Madrid] because that may have helped us with the Hargreaves situation.
"That wasn't to be, but hopefully we can get something done. It's in David Gill's capable hands. He's doing his best."

Sir Alex highlighted the England international's maturity in the holding midfield position as one of the main reasons behind United's interest.

It's looking good for man utd fans lol

Being one myself, with carrick, scholes and hargreaves to pick your central midfielders from, you can't really go wrong :P

I would have thought a striker would have been more of a priority.

Hmm I have to disagree though really. With Rooney back in 3 games, Louis Saha on good form in pre season, and Guiseppi Rossi starting to come through into the first team. The futures looking bright.

I heard Adriano was linked with a move, yet he will most probably be overpriced ...

With a midfield situation like that, who needs a replacement striker?
You have 1 superb holding midfielder in Hargreaves, 1 excellent playmaker in Carrick, and 1 outstanding attacking midfielder in Scholes!

Adriano would be an decent signing too, but it's pushing 1 too many bottle into the bank.

If he did sign, any bets he'd get Nistlerooy's No.10 shirt? ;)

Agree with above.

They will have an ace midfield when Carrick returns to fitness and if they do manage to sign him.

I think the Adriano rumours were about 25-30 mil.
