I love the music and i wear some of the clothes, but not those tight trousers ( i like to keep my manhood fully working thankyou).
But just be yourself, if that means your an emo then so be it, that person who told you "you just cant be emo" must think she is so special, you can be whatever you want.

Pah, there are no real emos around anymore just the fake ones aka scenesters. But to "become an emo" these days no doubt you'd have to like Fall Out Boy/Panic! At The Disco/My Chemical Romance/Taking Back Sunday, wear studded belts/drainpipes/converse/rimmed glasses and get a fringe/dyed hair. There. Yes thats stereotyping, but come to my town and you'll see that its nothing but a fashion trend. Don't get me started. :P

America is where it started and over there, it's pretty big. They seem to all stick with its original concept.
In England though, it's just a following. Anyone can be one, they just need an anime haircut, wear tight jeans and like bands like Panic! At The Disco. They do it for attention rather than do what emo's actually do.
Besides, with this labelling of apparent 'emo bands', many miss the point that Fallout Boy are hardly 'emo', and are just a pop-punk, heavy rock band.

Noo.. Emo is a kind of music. Such as panic! at the disco etc etc. Im a mosher who likes heavy stuff such as metallica, iron maiden, Kiss, thin lizzy,
bullet for my valentine, trivium, slipknot. but im a bit emo too. i like greenday. but emo isnt clothes and stuff it's music and a type of who you are :P

The idea of emos being sad isn't really true.. like goths, they often say they're depressed when something bad happens, and some of them might cut, but overall they're a pretty happy bunch (as long as they can pretend to be society's biggest rebels). Emo is a fashion, just like chav, goth, punk, etc., it's all about how you look. The "attitude" usually follows anyway, because people dress a certain way to either fit in (and as such will adopt the attitude of other such people) or to try standing out. In my experience, people who try to be "individual" and stand out are all the same. It's a case of "you should be an individual, just do what I do".
Basically, if you want to be emo, just get the haircut and some scarily tight trousers, maybe some Converse shoes and a tank top with some band name on it.

why would you "want to become emo" anyway? cant you just be yourself?
just wear what you feel most comfitable in, and listen to what you want to listen to, if it turns out that you listen to what "emos" listen to, then fair enough, but if not.. then dont change what you listen to, just so you can be labelled as an "emo". just be yourself.

That is true, there are no emo's in my school/town thought. The clostest thing is me and my mates, and tbh, I'm not really emo.

Everyone wants to fit in. You can't be truly "individual" as everything influences you in some way, and some people really do feel themselves when in a certain fashion - a fashion can't get around successfully if people don't like it, most fashions can be traced back to old fashions decades/centuries ago to some extent, there are some things the human race just like.

Exactly! Nothing of you is original. You're the combined effort of everyone you've known. Including lifestyle/background etc. You aren't "unique" if all you're doing is following yet another fad. Let's just hope emo dies out pretty soon imo.

The pidgeon-holing of people into different groups is slightly depressing in my opinion.

what your saying makes no sense. "i wish everyone was an individual like i am" pfft.
emo is just a trend, everyone follows a trend (unless you never listen to music or wear any clothes. :P ) when my nan and grandad bought me some converse they were going on about how they used to wear them except they used to be called danny k boots. all fashions will come around again and again.

Emo goes back longer than most of us can remember, and from what I have read it was actually quite 'Cool', different from today obviously.

ye see as my signature says, emo is a fasion, goth is a way of life. Emo is a fasion and it not like our generation invented fasion. All fasions nowdays were fasions long before us!

Goth is also a fashion I'm afraid.
I don't get why people feel the need to be "individual". It's not natural. Humans by nature are social creatures, we started in tribes and morphed into metropolitan city-dwellers. We enjoy being around other people (except agrophobics) and we obviously want to be liked. Aesthetics are what define us, because whatever you say people can often tell at least some of what you're like by how you look and how you dress. People who say "can't you just be yourselves?" need to realise that you can follow a fashion and still be yourself, because fashions allow us to be part of something. Subcultures remind our basic instincts of what tribes were like, which is why we often segregate ourselves. Those who don't are often miserable people who complain about things all day long and generally aren't happy. Whether you realise it or not, you are part of fashion. If you wear clothes, you have them as your fashion style. If you don't, you follow the style of the nudist/exhibitionist.
well most fasion is a phase really
True, but they're recurring phases which we see again and again. Clothing generally has to come under certain aspects - loose, tight, bright, bland, intricate, simple, plain, branded - so there can't be many new "original" ideas. Those that are closest to being original are on the catwalk and are usually things that no-one would ever dream of wearing as general clothing.
People, embrace subcultures. Embrace fashion. Embrace the fact that you don't have to be individual to be yourself. Embrace conformity. Embrace my bosom and **** my nipples.

Ok i kow goth is a fashion but what it means is i feel emo is a wanna b fashion. That is my opinion, you may dissagree but neway, i would rather be called goth because it is something i have been for quite a while now and i feel more goths are true goths thaan emos are true emos.
And as for the individual thing, everybody IS individual and why wouldnt you be individual you feel like your own person and nobody is the same your unqiue one of a kind and that is how i feel and it feels great. I have had a very tough past couple of years and i didnt feel like i was individual but lately i have started thinking more positive about and things are looking up.
So that is my opinion if you dissagree fair eenuf that is your opinion, i dont mean to cause any harm with what i say about emos, im sure there are many out there that are different to how i feel
:D
Wow that was long:P

they're all fashions.. no matter what it is it's a fashion. it cannot be a wanna-be fashion. fashion is just clothing. tbh, wearing spikey black clothes and white make-up, i could call that being wanna be. but i wont as all people like different fashions and wear what they like. emo is a fashion as well as goth, there is no difference between the two.
Metric.
02-09-2006, 04:23 PM
A girl (who isn't emo) explained this to me, if you become emo by choice, then you're not emo and if you say your emo your not emo.
FlyingJesus
02-09-2006, 04:38 PM
People wrongly assume that fashion and mentality are two different things. If you wear the clothing of a certain fashion group, there is something in your brain that makes your views on clothing the same as those of the others, thus making you part of the fashion movement. Emo is not a "wannabe" fashion, it's a very real fashion, as proven by the fact that it's spread so far. A "wannabe" fashion would be if someone tried something completely different to anything anyone else has done, and it would probably fail for reasons I explained earlier.
On individuality.
You may well feel like you're different, like you stand out. Fair enough, but don't confuse that for actually being original and different. Everything you do, someone has done before. Being "your own person" is different to being individual, you don't have to follow a fashion to the very core to be part of it, and indeed many people who are said to be emos, chavs, goths, whatever, they don't always act in a way that the fashion befits. This isn't individuality, it's not non-comformity, it's not rebellion. It's human nature - we act and dress how we do because of what we've seen/done/smelt/tasted/heard/felt/known/been told/experienced/missed out on. Everything affects us in some way, so yes, we may all have our differences, but at the end of the day we are all humans with the same basic instinctive programming that makes us a successful - if diverse - race.
