Because some people, definately girls wouldn't want to splash the cash and get a PS3. So a cheaper Pink PS2 when the PS3 comes out would be ideal.

Some people probally won't get a PS3 for a couple of years, the RRP for the basic model is like £350, that's quite a bit to pay for a games console

Maybe your rooms pink and you wanna be colour-coded? lmao, I'm not being sexist, but it's obviously aimed at females, and trying to draw them in with a pink PS2

Aswell as what Stealth said, it appeals to another range of audience, the colour may appeal to the girls more than anything.
