I want to be a sociologist. You know, one of the lazy people that sit at home and write out their veiws on the world and get paid for it, not the annoying ones who wander the streets with surveys ;) Or a drug dealer, which is why I'm learning the Imperial system instead of the metric ;)

Unless you're already in college/uni studying for it, forget computer programming jobs. What's happened is that there was a need for lots of programmers, so lots of people have started doing the courses for it, and because the courses take a few years to get all the qualifications, there is still jobs open for this kind of work, and so younger people think they can get in on it. In reality, by the time people my age and younger have finished their courses, the people who started them a year or two ago when the vacancies came about will have already filled all the jobs up. You'd have to be very lucky to get a job in programming if you're not coming into your final or penultimate year of studies for it now.

To answer the question: I'd like to be a writer. I have a book started already which will hopefully reach in excess of a couple of hundred standard book-size pages on it (just smaller than A5, about 5"x8" I think). Failing that, maybe a teacher of some kind, or a politician.

Sorry but your completely wrong. Although software development may be top job in USA and popular in the UK you don't get many people who can actually do any form of programming trying to learn.

They go to college with no experience of any formatting language, have no logical understanding in them and fail miserably. My brother went into college knowing C++ and C# and came out A* on his exams due to sheer motivation and hard-work.

You judge people because of the majority who don't work and thats wrong as if you work for something and deep down in your heart you want it then you will strive to get it.

I have been programming to an extent since I was 13 mainly HTML at that time but learning harder languages such as Javascript, DOM, PHP, VB and some bits of C++ and I will always go for the thing I want.

People including my IT teacher say if you want something go for it, so don't try and say people have no chance of getting there, your profession that you have chosen is probably more difficult.

I currently have a portfolio which I am using to try and get freelance jobs doing some jobs for little money and that will help when I am one of 'those young developers' trying to get a job as people can be prepared with a good attitude and well preformed portfolio so don't judge people by what you have read.

I think you misunderstood me. At least, that's what I gather seeing as your post isn't in any relevance to mine. I wasn't saying that programming is a "doss" that anyone can do, I'm saying that the need for programmers started a few years ago, and so people who are only just starting to learn and study for it now will be too late by the time they finish their studies - even if you know the languages you have to get the qualifications which takes at least a year of studies. Look and learn:

* Widespread need for certain job.
* People start to get qualifications for such job.
* A couple of years on, the people who started working on qualifications haven't finished yet and so the jobs are still open.
* Younger people see the jobs are still open and decide to get onto the courses needed.
* First waves of people finish their courses and claim the jobs.
* Later waves finish their courses but their qualifications are near useless, as there are now no jobs requiring them.
