First of all, what do you mean by not too expensive, and also do you have a dsl or an adsl internet connection?

Nah, don't bother with wi-fi max. For a make of router, I recommend Linksys or Belkin. Also I hear Netgear are decent. Make sure you get the right one for your internet connection, dsl or adsl - they are completely different.

Does it come over your phone line? Oh wait, i googled it and it looks like its cable. If its cable then a cable will come into your house and connect to a cable modem - that is dsl, if you have a modem that connects to a phone line for the internet it is adsl.

Linksys are really good when you change the power settings, so that it uses a bit more electricity, but it has a better siganal and a larger range. You might not have found it good because it may have been set to only cover a small area in it's range.
