Some bad news for the Wii today. It turns out there will be no online play in 3rd party games for the Wii until early 2007. The reason for this is simply that Nintendo won't be supplying the necessary SDK code to developers allowing them to use online functionality until then.
Nintendo's motivation for this is unknown. Perhaps the SDK isn't ready yet, or it could be they need the time to test the online system with their own games. All of this means that none of the launch titles will be capable of online play, with Red Steel being a possible exception since it's being developed with close support from Nintendo. Any other online Wii titles we see this year will likely be from Nintendo themselves.
