Yes that's right, Microsofts version of the iPod to be released sometime during Christmas.

Microsoft semi-officially launched its Zune wireless MP3 player on Thursday, describing in more detail how its business model will work.
Previously, Microsoft had confirmed that the device will be manufactured by Toshiba and will contain a 30-Gbyte hard drive and wireless capabilities, which were confirmed as a Wi-Fi capability. Other confirmed features include a 3-inch screen and FM tuner.
However, the Zune's price was not disclosed. It will ship during the "holiday season" this year, Microsoft said, soon enough that "users will be able to put it on their holiday buying list," said Matt Jubelirer, a Microsoft product manager for the Zune.
"We won't be undercut by Apple," Jubelirer said, when asked to clarify the price of the player.
The Zune is Microsoft's answer to the iPod, and speculation before the launch was that the Zune was disclosed to remove some of the cachet from Apple's recent launch of upgraded iPods and a new product, the iTV. However, the iPod lacks the ability to communicate with other players, a key feature of the Zune.
According to Jubelirer, users will be able to share any song currently on the Zune player to any other user within Wi-Fi range, with the caveat that both the source and target Zune player must accept the download, to prevent random browsing of Zune content. Each song may be played either three times per day or once every three days, after which it must be purchased from the Zune music store, which will be called the Zune Marketplace. Users will be able to buy individual tracks from the Zune Marketplace, or buy an all-you-can-eat subscription for an undisclosed price.
"Millions of songs" will be available to be downloaded from the Zune Marketplace, according to Microsoft. But every Zune will be preloaded with music from DTS, EMI Music's Astralwerks Records and Virgin Records, Ninja Tune, Playlouderecordings, Quango Music Group, Sub Pop Records, and V2/Artemis Records.
"With the all-you-can eat model, we think this becomes compelling when paired with discovery," Jubelirer said, referring to the sharing of music between Zunes. "With a couple of buddies who own Zunes, you can grow and expand your musical tastes and collection far beyond what you previously imagined."
Users who go beyond the song playback limit can flag a song to be purchased from the Zune marketplace when he or she syncs the Zune with the PC, Jubelirer said. The Zune also includes the ability to be upgraded, which "gives flexibility to the whole experience," Jubelirer said.
The upgrades are, in part, designed to kepp the software "safe and secure and working perfectly over time," Jubelirer said.
Microsoft also confirmed three bundles, one each for the car, home, and travel. The Zune Car Pack includes a Zune Car Charger. The Zune Home A/V Pack is designed to interoperate with the TV and music speakers, including a Zune AV Output Cable, Zune Dock, Zune Sync Cable, Zune AC Adapter and the Zune Wireless Remote for Zune Dock. Finally, the Zune Travel Pack includes the Zune Premium Earphones, Zune Dual Connect Remote, Zune Gear Bag, Zune Sync Cable and the Zune AC Adapter.
The Zune will ship in three colors: black, white, and brown; the latter choice had already provoked some interesting reactions from bloggers on the afternoon of Microsoft's launch. "It's a pretty cool color, isn't it?" Jubelirer said. "Some people absolutely love it. It's something that really relates to our Zune brand. Our brand reflects options and choice independent of what color you choose."
The black player will have blue highlights, Jubelirer said.
Microsoft also said it was working with a number of leading electronics manufacturers to develop peripherals: Altec Lansing, Belkin, Digital Lifestyle Outfitters (DLO), Dual Electronics, Griffin Technology, Harman Kardon and JBL, Integrated Mobile Electronics, Jamo International, Klipsch Audio Technologies, Logitech, Monster Cable Products, Speck, Targus Group International Inc. and VAF Research.

Apple can easily integrate their ipods with wireless if they need to keep competing...
And the market is saturated... Microsoft wont disrupt Apple's market share...

Bill Gates has enough money.
Older products fall, Bill Gates looses money. Newer products come in, Bill gates makes money. And really, why does it matter if he has anough money? Hows that stopping microsoft from making an mp3 player?

Looks nice. They would need security on it because it would probably be able to be hacked some way from another person with a Zune.

I liked the concept pictures, but I've seen real shots on Engadget and boy are those things huge.

I won't be buying one; I'm happy with my blue nano until Apple brings out an iPod video with a bigger screen.

Bill Gates has enough money.

He quit microsoft to focus on his charity. Even while he was there, he donated most of his earnings to charity. Im sure most people in the world wouldnt do the same.

And yeah, Ive seen it, looks great.

The zune pics and details have been around for a number of months now? And my orignal veridct of butt ugly still stands, i think creative zen's are realy the way to go. They pretty much do everything an ipod does, Then add in about 30 to 40 exstra features, 5 times the battery life, and cheeper to buy.... as to say, there more likly to become the real competitors imo

Creative sued and won a 100 million dollar suit against apple because they stole some of their patented technology for ipod. So that says theyre at least ahead technology wise.

Have you been living under a rock? Or are you just unaware of other mp3 players making a huge hit? Many companies are making them and they're doing great: Creative, iRiver, Toshiba, etc.

Personally, I'm not too keen on the colour but the whole thing sounds fine and dandy :)

I didn't really get what I was reading, but is it that you have to buy songs instead of uploading them now?

But personally, I still think Apple is ahead by miles, if not only by brand recognition. I know so many people who refer to MP3 players in general as "iPods".

Theyre ahead by brand recognition, but thats it. Their technology isnt new. Everyone thought that iPod video was the first video MP3 player, but there was a video by creative out a few years before.

Becuse the ******s? ipod IS NOT AN mp3 player... it does NOT play MP3s.... it uses an itunes format insted... itunes media files are not in mp3 format "/

I like it but i think the ipod will be still in the lead, ipod is a name everyone knows (apart from cave dwellers) in alot of countries, I doubt people would just ditch their old ipod's for a new unknown music player. I think they released it a little too late, if they had release it maybe 2 years ago with all the technology it has i think it would've been more of a success than the ipod.

I'm on a mac so I can't buy a Zune. =]

I don't need WiFi to send music to each other tbh. Apple will bring out something along the same lines.

Oh, and yes, the iPod is an MP3 player. It plays my MP3s.

no they done, the itunes converts mp3 to the itunes format before it can be played on an ipod... theres no inate mp3 support "/

Yeah, its unfortunate, really. Unless another player can get better advertizing out, iPod will be in the lead for marketing. There are so many better mp3 player companies with more types and better quality for less money, but no one knows about them.

And entor is right, technically iPod isnt an MP3 player.

That sounds like BS to me. Then conversion to AAC (not iTunes format, AAC) is incredibly fast. I know that you can set it to convert all your tunes to 128kb/s AAC before putting it onto an iPod.

Oh wait, it is an MP3 player, once I opened up my iPod on my grandad's computer and I could access all of the muisic files (i don't know how i did it), and they would play in Media Player on a PC. I am on a mac.

It's complete BS that isn't an MP3 player.

I don't care, iPods will be the only thing for me because there is no real good Music DRM player for mac apart from the iPod.
