It did hit an iceberg, which ripped a hole in it. They could however have keep it afloat for longer and quite possibly saved almost the entire population of the ship. If you remember the film you may recall that when one area got flooded they close all of the flood hatches at the lowest decks so that it wouldn't spread. This caused the water to go up rather than across, and pulled the ship upright into that infamous scene where it goes vertical and splits in half. If they'd left the flood hatches open it would have stayed horizontal, and in fact would have saved them quite a bit of time (and also they'd have more surface space for people to survive on).

This Coke chap is probably going to say something about the binoculars being left in Southampton, which isn't the reason it sank, it's just the reason they didn't see the iceberg in time. The real reason that the Titanic sank is that it had lots and lots of water in it.

Even if the manufacturing of it was wrong (which goes towards the "both" option as man made the machine that failed) that isn't the reason it sank. The reason is that they hit an iceberg which broke their little boat and it filled with heavy heavy water.

Yes, I didn't say they would have kept afloat completely in that post, just for longer (and so would have saved more people). As you said, 5 compartments were damaged, but shutting them off meant that the boat was extremely overweighted at one end, which of course led to it turning into an erection.

There we have it then, it was an iceburg you idiot... You even said it yourself. The first problem was the iceburg, the manufacturing has little to do with it. As long as it floats and keeps the water out and survives a few waves, it is safe. What? They were expected to make a 5 foot deep metal hull? This was pre-1920's I believe, they never really thought about this. If you got this off of some modern site saying stuff about modern technology, I suggest you pick up and read a book about many inventions you see used today and how many flaws they had that were never really known.

Here is an example, lead pipes. No one knew they would get lead poisoning, they were only concerned about what going from 1 end to another.

You really are an idiot "/

If you can? You seem to of missed the fact that neither man or machine sank it, in the long run, it was an iceburg "/ It was a natural cause. The iceburg caused it, and the effect was a hull breach, where both man and machine come in.

something to do with the amount of Metal in the rivets to much Metal or too little will make it weak and also at the back of the ship the used a drill or something but at the front they couldn't get it in the hull there fore they put them on by hand and that meant that they could rip-off alot easier and when diaster struck all the rivets fell off so there you go

GommeInc
24-09-2006, 12:44 PM
Indeed. Another example you can use is a car crashing into a rock. The rock caused the crash, rather than a machine or a man getting out the car and dropping the rock on the car itself.

Changing it to the Titantic...

The iceburg caused it to sink, rather than the captain getting out of the bridge and dropping an iceburg in the water so he can go and hit it in a few moments later.

It was Thomas Andrews' fault

The belief that the ship was unsinkable was, in part, due to the fact that the Titanic had sixteen watertight compartments. However, the compartments did not reach as high as they should have done. The White Star Line did not want them to go all the way up because this would have reduced living space in first class. If Mr Andrews, the ship's architect, had insisted on making them the correct height then maybe the Titanic would not have sunk.

It was Captain Smith's fault

http://www.historyonthenet.com/Titanic/images/captainsmith.jpg
This was Captain E. J. Smith's retirement trip. All he had to do was get to New York in record time. Captain E. J. Smith said years before the Titanic's voyage, "I cannot imagine any condition which would cause a ship to founder. Modern shipbuilding has gone beyond that." Captain Smith ignored seven iceberg warnings from his crew and other ships. If he had called for the ship to slow down then maybe the Titanic disaster would not have happened.

It was the shipbuilder's fault

http://www.historyonthenet.com/Titanic/images/rivet.jpg
About three million rivets were used to hold the sections of the Titanic together. Some rivets have been recovered from the wreck and analysed. The findings show that they were made of sub-standard iron. When the ship hit the iceberg, the force of the impact caused the heads of the rivets to break and the sections of the Titanic to come apart. If good quality iron rivets had been used the sections may have stayed together and the ship may not have sunk.

It was Bruce Ismay's fault

http://www.historyonthenet.com/Titanic/images/bruceismay.jpg
Bruce Ismay was the Managing Director of the White Star Line and he was aboard the Titanic. Competition for Atlantic passengers was fierce and the White Star Line wanted to show that they could make a six-day crossing. To meet this schedule the Titanic could not afford to slow down. It is believed that Ismay put pressure on Captain Smith to maintain the speed of the ship.

It was Thomas Andrews' fault

It was Captain Lord's Fault

http://www.historyonthenet.com/Titanic/images/captainlord.jpg
The final iceberg warning sent to Titanic was from the Californian. Captained by Walter Lord, she had stopped for the night about 19 miles north of Titanic. At around 11.15, Californian's radio operator turned off the radio and went to bed. Sometime after midnight the crew on watch reported seeing rockets being fired into the sky from a big liner. Captain Lord was informed but it was concluded that the ship was having a party. No action was taken by the Californian. If the Californian had turned on the radio she would have heard the distress messages from Titanic and would have been able to reach the ship in time to save all passengers.

I think we have an emergency

If you thought I'd leave, then you were wrong
Cause I won't stop holding on

So are you watching me?

If you thought I'd leave, then you were wrong
Cause I won't stop holding on.

This is an emergency
So are you listening?

And I can't pretend that I don't see this

Well it's really not your fault
When no one cares to talk about it,
To talk about it

Cause I've seen love die
Way too many times
When it deserved to be alive
I've seen you cry
Way too many times
When you deserve to be alive

So you give up every chance you get
Just to feel new again

I think we have an emergency
I think we have an emergency

And you do your best to show me love,
but you don't know what love is.

So are you listening?
So are you watching me?

And I can't pretend that I don't see this

Well it's really not your fault
When no one cares to talk about it,
To talk about it

Cause I've seen love die
Way too many times
When it deserved to be alive
I've seen you cry
Way too many times
When you deserve to be alive (alive)

These scars, they will not fade away.

No one cares to talk about it, talk about it

Cause I've seen love die
Way too many times
When it deserved to be alive
I've seen you cry
Way too many times
When you deserve to be alive

this song just fitted in, & it came on my itunes k.

something to do with the amount of Metal in the rivets to much Metal or too little will make it weak and also at the back of the ship the used a drill or something but at the front they couldn't get it in the hull there fore they put them on by hand and that meant that they could rip-off alot easier and when diaster struck all the rivets fell off so there you go

But it wouldn't of sank if it was for the Iceburg. Idiot.

The rivets were fine, the iceberg was just a bit cheeky and cast level 3 corrode on them.

I think we have an emergency
I think we have an emergency

If you thought I'd leave, then you were wrong
Cause I won't stop holding on

So are you listening?
So are you watching me?

If you thought I'd leave, then you were wrong
Cause I won't stop holding on.

This is an emergency
So are you listening?

And I can't pretend that I don't see this

Well it's really not your fault
When no one cares to talk about it,
To talk about it

Cause I've seen love die
Way too many times
When it deserved to be alive
I've seen you cry
Way too many times
When you deserve to be alive

So you give up every chance you get
Just to feel new again

I think we have an emergency
I think we have an emergency

And you do your best to show me love,
but you don't know what love is.

So are you listening?
So are you watching me?

And I can't pretend that I don't see this

Well it's really not your fault
When no one cares to talk about it,
To talk about it

Cause I've seen love die
Way too many times

yes the ice burg hit it but there was something about the manufacturing

The ledges of the compartments weren't higher enough so the Water just went over them, The Iceberg was still the Cause of it.

It sank becuse it hit an ice burg.
People died becuse they didnt think it would sink and hence didnt have enough life boats.
The titanic had multiple hulls which theroiocaly ment if one was breached the rest would stull keep it afloat.
The design was crap, so in reality when one was breached, water pression seeping in to it then burst in to the surrounding hulls and so on... Even futrama have gags realiting to it.. "/

It was man who didn't spot the iceberg...they wouldn't have had a computer telling them what was happening. It was an unfortunate accident.
