Oooh that's quite interesting. They might have had to buy it off the company. I don't think you can force a company to give up a domain unless they're not using it or unless they bought it specifically to sell it to you (which is illegal so you can have it given to you through courts).

It is not illegal to sell a domain as long as you didn't register that domain just to sell it.
