Atleast 512mb RAM, but you will still experiance slow movement in the main cities such as Ironforge and Stormwind (or Orgrimmar and UC for horde) etc.
I used to have 256MB, and WoW was literally unplayable. I couldn't even move in the main cities, it just froze. I then upgraded to 1g.
1 gig would be perfect (which is what I have).
Hope that helps.
Awww, I'm only 256.....
How much would an upgrade to 1 gig be?

Not sure, but upgrading the RAM will definitely help. It will be totally unplayable at anything under 512 for you.
How much do upgrades cost?

Upgrades of RAM? Depends on a number of issues.

Where do you see how much RAM you have? ;\
Start (little thing in bottom left) > Control Panel > System.

I'm guessing you have Windows...
Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > System
then look at the information (system specs) provided within the box.
