The only way not to hurt him is to be honest with him. Say that too him aswell. Tell him your not trying to hurt him in any way whatsoever because you value the friendship but you don't want to be anything more than friends with him. If he is that good a friend he will understand. :)

Well, just wait until he asks you out - if he does. There's no point you bringing it up before him. Then once he does, just say to him you think you'd rather just stay as friends. Explain to him that you love things the way they are and don't want your friendship to be effected. If he doesn't understand then that's his loss, but don't like keep bringing it up or hold it against him or anything. Just try and keep things going on like normal and be there as a friend for him. :)
