There are many other STI's out there other than HIV, and some despite using protection are contageous, take scabbies for example, that can be transmitted by close contact.

I'm no longer in a sexual relationship, but when I was we decided that condoms were just annoying (and had a couple of close calls with pregnancy) and so she got a contraceptive implant which sorted that, and we both knew we were clear for diseases. So that's protection, yes, but no to condoms. It's much better without ;)
