I'm not sure what this is.. will anyone tell me? +Rep to Anyone who tells me how to use it too :)

Basicaly its a type of Database, useing the Sql format ( Standard query language)
You usealy see mysql being used with php on webservers since like php, its nice free and open source :D
So on the asumption you plan to use mysql via php, insted of via command prompt, and directly entering querys (which can be more confuseing)
This nice, handly dandy tutoral will walk you threw the basics, start to finish. Very useful imo, you may want to skip the first section about installing apachie, php and mysql though

Microsoft Works is a text-processor is it not, do you mean Microsoft Access and to be honest mySQL and Access aren't the same..

It's the same context as they're both DB's but MySQL is a database basically which you can program to do all sorts of things.
