if your going to make a forum and you plan on doing well then a vb or other paid for forum such as invision board are the way to go. altho there are alot of free forums like phpbb with a number of plugins vb (which i use) is deffintly the best and contains a greater number of plugins

sooo VB ftw

I'd go with VBulletin as it's the best supported and has the best help staff and plugin's.

It's what i prefer anyway!

I have vBulletin.

If you use IPB 1.3, and use the appropriate addons, extras, and plug-ins, combined with a great design, it can be just as good.

However, if you want the easy way, the vBulletin. I just hate them

FREE BOARDS FTW

Vb as free ones tend to suealy have alot of adds and are harder to use , VB give a better finished product

It depends what you want really, would you rather have a good website or a not so good website.

SEO wise, SMF is great, there are loads of SEO add-ons for SMF whereas for vbulletin there is only 2 mod_rewrite hacks, one costing $150.

Depends on what sorta website ya gona make..

Gfx and gaming sites are more popular to be on ipb

but more proffessional sites are popular to be on vb

and some good sites but not that popular are on freebies..

for example silkcity.fm is on phpbb

Look at the forums with the most members in the world:

1. Free

vBulletin doesnt make your site great more than a free forum

phpBB or custom ftw.
vB just goes into loads of detail and makes stuff more complex than they need to be.

www.sourceforge.net search for vbulletin and you'll find loads of look-a-likes.

Damn right there Dan.

A computer made by Dell can be just as good as one you make at home.
Same theory applies

Ipb 1.3 but i dont think you can download it legally anymore except from invisionfree. Dont waste your money on a Vb theyre too common nowadays.

OK. Listen to people who know very little about anything.

You dont need good forum software to make a good forum. Most people who have vB's have around 30 members. Its what you do with your forum taht counts. People who count, ie, the majority of internet users, do not care about what forum software you use
