Does this woman go to Heaven or Hell? Discuss.

I'm posting this after reading this thread:

I find this discussion particularly frustrating, because many Christians say that the woman would go to Hell.


A middle-aged woman has gone through her whole life striving to be a good human being. She tries hard to avoid breaking the law, hurting people, being immoral and doing bad things. She gives to charity all through her life, more than your average person. She has donated a large proportion of her income to charity, and sincerely wants to help people in the world.

One day, the woman spots a girl struggling in a river. The woman jumps in the river to help the girl, without taking a moment to think about herself. The woman saves the girl and gets her out of the water, but she is exhausted and the current of the river pulls her under.

After living a good life and being charitable she loses her life and drowns, whilst rescuing a little girl from a river.

She doesn't believe in God. She is an atheist.

Presuming God exists and the woman is wrong, does she go to Heaven or Hell?

Well, if she doesn't believe in God, then she most likely won't believe in heaven, in which case, she doesn't believe in hell/Satan either.

well according to many religious leaders such as the pope say that we are given a chance in life to give God our exceptance (sp?) but if we don't except him before we pass away we don't go on to heven

In Christianity you have to have knowledge of God and believe in him to go to Heaven, otherwise you are a heretic and go to Hell :rolleyes:. Murderers, peadophiles etc. can also go to Heaven, as long as they are sorry and believe in God.

I don't believe in this farse called 'GOD' and heaven isn't only for christianity, there is different forms for different religions and i believe there is just one giant one, lead a good life no matter who you are and you'll go to it.

If she's thought always about the end cause, and therefore giving the most amount of good to the most amount of people, then theorically she has led a good life and should go to heaven. Regardless of her religion.

Thomas, I was gonna say something about utilitarianism but then realised that it makes no difference to what Biblical text actually dictates. It's clear that she's lived a "moral" life (according to utilitarianism and most other ethical theories) but she never "accepted" Jesus and so will not enter the Christian heaven if that is where we go when we die.

Being an aithiest id say nether, but christanty clearly states shes going to hell. Read the narnia series for exsample, one of the main charicters goes to hell for just an impure thought... so hell is where most good people go, only rapests murders etc who accept god actualy go to hevern, so if i had to choose, i think id probably get better company in hell "/

I think drowning is natural. And That isnt really the point of the question in the thread. It is because she didnt believe in heaven or hell.

I dont think she would go to heaven because she didnt believe in it. What if christianaty was wrong and some other religion which sais that when you die you go to another plannet. Would the people who dont believe in it go to the plannet?

But personally I dont believe in religoin so I dont think anyone goes to heaven or hell so..

Also thats contrary to his own nature, so unless the diety you speak of isnt the chrisan god, he would be requred by his own benevolent definitiuon to allow anyone in to heven.

Heaven isn't supposed to be a full place.. it's meant to be for those who follow and love God. After all, if you don't like God, why would you want to spend eternity with him anyway?

According to my religion (Islam), a person must believe in God when he/she dies in order to go to heaven. But, in this case. Yes, she will go in hell I think, but after her punishment, there is still a chance for her to go to heaven. But this is only possible if she didn't discriminate or insult religions when she was alive.

Even though I am a strong Christian, I believe that anyone can go to heaven, no matter what religion, Islam, Buddhist, doesn't matter.

No, she won't. Isn't it the only way to go to heaven is if you accept God as your own saviour, go to church, etc? Since she didn't do either, she's not going to have a place there.

Okay, I do not, nor do I have any intention of doing so, however if I was God then I would most certainly send this woman to Hell. She jumps into the river without giving any thought about herself, now being God (in this scenario I am), I've taken the time to create this woman and for her to go and ruin herself on some girl without thinking about it shows how much she doesn't care about me. Now obviously she's an aethist so she wouldn't care about me, however being the supreme ruler of the galaxy I'd expect such a worthless lifeform to care with their entire soul about me. I don't like how she's disregarded my feelings and wasted my time by neglecting her own life on a girl who is probably drowning for a good reason. Therefore I would definately send her to Hell without even thinking about it.
