Internet access in Singapore severely affected by Taiwan quake
By Farah Abdul Rahim, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 27 December 2006 1803 hrs
SINGAPORE : Internet and phone services were disrupted in Singapore and the rest of Southeast Asia following Tuesday's earthquake in Taiwan.
The strong earthquake in Taiwan had damaged several undersea cables around the island.
Many internet users had difficulty accessing sites online, especially US sites.
The instant messaging service was also down.
Internet users faced a long wait in downloading information on the internet.
Some e-commerce activities were also affected as a result of problems with internet and telecommunication systems.
Singapore internet service provider StarHub and Southeast Asia's largest telco SingTel say the earthquake caused disruptions to the undersea cables, resulting in slow internet access to some sites.
Both companies say internet traffic diversion and restoration works are currently underway. - CNA /ls

Because the au offices in Sydney are so close to singapore -.-
Unless au has a few servers in singapore. I've heard a few people say that although I don't think it's true. Why not have them at the offices.

I was being sarcastic.
If they haven't moved then the habbo au offices are in sydney or around there. Sydney is is the fairly lower East part of Austraia, however singapore is very very far North West of Australia.
"tis quite close. I looked on google maps"
Are you sure you are looking at the scale and not just putting a ruler on the map and saying! Oh it's only say, 8cm away!
4th year geography ftw
So unless some of Australia's servers lie in Singapore (Not really much point to that) or a magical fault line has appeared connecting Sydney and Singapore I doubt that's the reason. I am from NSW and I can not connect to au. I guess I'll have to do my business on another hotel.

Don't be daft.
Both the Australian hotel & the Singaporean hotel are located in the SingTel data centre in Singapore. There's no need to host them in Australia as it's significantly more expensive & the different between getting data from Singapore & Sydney is like a hundredth of a split second!! Hosting two hotels (both reasonably small) on the one cluster is more efficient than hosting them in two locations which are close. The only thing located in Australia are the Sydney Sulake offices, which are, purely that. Only staff use this location, the tech stuff is in Singapore.
As for the downtime, it could be any period from 24 hours to more than a week. However, everyone needs to remember that the more time the hotel is down for, the less $$ Sulake is receiving, not to mention the advertising revenue lost.
The earthquake which caused the problem was in TAIWAN, not Singapore. However, cables connecting other areas of the world from the SingTel data centre were affected by the earth activity, thus producing this problem. Some areas of the world (States in Australia in particular) will be able to access the site at some times, mainly because 2 of the 7 cables were damaged.
Thanks

there was a earthquake in Singapore
There wasn't. I'm in singapore and there was no earthquake. However, I believe some parts of singapore felt the presence of an earthquake. But yes, the internet here is pretty dodgy and everything's going nuts. But tbh I just hope the taiwanese people are okay.

yeah sadly ...
The submarine cable is cut off December 26th (the fire) by the earthquake which in the night occurs with the Taiwan southern open sea, communication obstacle occurs. In connection with this, presently we have entered in a state where it cannot access the ", Habbo hotel", several days it is expected in restoration that it is required. We bet annoyance in only utilization very much, but please wait for a while to restoration. Something, understanding we ask cooperation
Thats coming from habbo.jp

I'm from Singapore and went to Taiwan 5 times so I can give you a more detailed explanation:
Earthquake measuring 7.1 [According to US] or 6.8 [According to Taiwan] hit the southern part of Taiwan [Kenting], damaging 6/7 undersea data cables.
Traffic from the US/UK has to be diverted to Australia and Japan. Hence its really congested and pages takes ages to load.

Yep, 2 people dead in Taiwan so far... :eusa_booh :'(
oo tv just said it while i was reading wth
"It could be weeks before the cables are repaired"
hm...
"A reminder to the society how reliant we have become on technology only available in the last decade"
"Some buisnesses have lost over 1 billion dollars already" o.o
"I dont think the government in Australia is prepared for a disaster like this"
"Could take upto 3 weeks to repair the cables"
God they make it seem like the end of the world rofl.

Tbh you should just go out. Stop staying at home and waiting for habbo to reopen. ;)
And it's funny how much we humans rely on technology. Just because a few cables snapped the whole world goes haywire.

You wont loose your furni e.t.c. Its all stored in a database in the hotels office, the only reason why the hotels are down is because the under sea cables have been destroyed. All internet traffic is automatticly redirected via other cables increacing web traffic on all lines worldwide. Thats why it takes (may take) longer for pages to load, but im sure this has been said before :)

Yeah but strange like ... 80% of traffic has been reroute. yet why isn't Habbo up yet?
