It's to prevent many pointless posts saying it's old news, when somebody posts old news at least 5 people will tell the person it's old new, 1 post is enough.
You can just report the post anyway.

Exactly. Even if its old news, it can still be discussed until a moderator notices it and locks it. Theres no need to flame or pointless post saying "OLD NEWS".

If you find any old news, just report it using the report post button :).
