Modern Languages?

Is there a point in modern Languages? Its like when do you need them in your life, they are a load of rubbish.. and you dont even learn much,

I hate languages but they have got use. If you can speak a extra language you have a good chance of getting a decent job.

Well what i think is that you should have a choice of doing it.. but i guess when you are in year 6 you won't know if you need langauge in your future life.

I learn Spanish and it's pretty good. I've been learning it for around 5 years and I've learnt quite a lot. It's good if you're going to Spain or the place which you know how to speak the language of.

I type properly, as I find it easier, as I type god-knows how many essays, and having two styles of typing is annoying. It also improves your English Writing technique, and is easy to read.

I type properly, as I find it easier, as I type god-knows how many essays, and having two styles of typing is annoying. It also improves your English Writing technique, and is easy to read.

of course it's not pointless.

if you have a gcse in a language other than english then you're more likely to get accepted because you're multi-lingual.

it's a great gcse to have.

Most school subjects are well thought out. Modern languages, when you get a qualification in a language it prooves that you can keep things in your long term memory, History prooves you can get information from bare sources, English shows you can examine text very carefully, show your oppionions well, and be a good public speaker. If it was pointless then it wouldn't be a requirement :). I WANT to learn fluent French, it's great talking to people so that others can't understand, and speak to people from other cultures :p.

Are you serious? You can't depend on everyone else to speak your language. That's just ignorance; you should at least attempt to speak their language.

I always hear, "Why are we doing this? I'm never going to go to Germany when I'm older." - I'm sure they aren't psychic. When it comes down to it, employers are looking for multilingual applicants. In some fields of work, e.g. clerical, you can get paid up to 20&#37; more with a qualification in another language than without.

In our school it's awful. We're choosing GCSEs atm, and guess waht? The policy is that we have to do a modern language. So basically, for me, it's only three options... And German. However, it's a small price to pay for the second best State School in the country! (Shows off)

agreed. we have to take 2 languages at my school, it sucks. Ima just get the C at GCSE then hopefully never have to speak or look at french or German until i go on holiday there and whip out my french phrase book. And also why do you get so many chineese people that come to england and then go to college or uni and do a degree in chineese?

I miss learning languages.

I can speak fluently in German and even though I might not go to Germany you can never say never.

What's to say you won't meet a German person in your job role in the future? As someone rightly said, in certain jobs you can get paid 20% more in some jobs for speaking another language - even if you don't have to use it in the job, it just shows responsibility and a lack of ignorance towards other cultures.

That 20% extra could be the difference between a nice car or a rubbish car; nice house or a normal house. Learning a language could be the difference between getting in to the course you want at university and not getting in to it. If they have 2 people with exactly the same qualifications, but one is fluent in another language then guess which they're gonner pick?

Even when I'd finished learning German I went on to do an after school course in Japanese. Admittedly I gave that up after a few months but that was because of other commitments.

I personally hate modern foreign languages. I hate the way they are taught and hate the language. It is okay if you can speak fluently, but otherwise i think it is quite hard. i'v been studying both french and german at school for three years now and have to choose one to do at gcse so i'm doing german. also, often in france and germany lots of people can speak english, or at least the basics, so this is ok. I know this is probably quite a lazy attitude, but i think english is the best lanugage, and probably a very biased view, but i love the language and would love to continue english literature into A Level when i get there. I love Latin too, this is not a modern language, but i find it is taught differently. I really like the language and structure of the words, and second to english, it is my favourite language.

I Suppose; 100 times out of 100 you might get German as you language then might go to spain and never go to Germany, what use would that be?

Our school is a language college, so we HAVE to waste at least 1 GCSE with a language. Granted, if you want to be a translator, they are useful, but tbh, half the stuff they teach is pointless.

at least you dont have to do three languages, i have to do english, french and irish. however i am lucky as i love both english and french. irish is okay too. i'm better at languages than i am at maths and science.

It's hard to grasp - but I think more than half of the world's population speak English and more than 80% have English as a second language.

Pretty dominant because of the British Empire etc.

This amazes me when people say whats the point in a certain subject, as GCSE is a GCSE it will help you get the job over another person.

Also, Its useful in the RAF as you may be posted, and in any job you may encounter and person who doesnt talk english!

There are loads of reasons that you learn Languages at school.
1) The UK is behind EVERY Europian country with learning languages.
2) you can never go wrong when you're learning languages (In later life)
3) If you learn one language its easier to pick up another.

also, there is less then 5&#37; of the world that speak English :P

Yes, thats right every country uses English or atleast can speak it is a world language. You even get countrys where they abandon there own language and take on English.
