In the context of administering computer systems (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_system), defragmentation (or defragging) is a process that reduces the amount of fragmentation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_system_fragmentation) in file systems (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_system). It does this by physically reorganizing the contents of the disk in order to store the pieces of each file (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_file) close together and in order (contiguously). It also attempts to create larger regions of free space using compaction to impede the return of fragmentation. Some defragmenters also try to keep smaller files within a single directory together, as they are often accessed in sequence.
of wiki. i don't have a clue aha.

Short for defragmentation. To understand what defragmentation means, you must first understand what fragmentation is. Fragmentation is when entire files are broken down into many pieces and spread across the hard drive. This can also happen regarding free space on the hard drive. Now, defragmentation is the action of collecting the various “fragments” of files and grouping them back together.
Or shorter
to clean up a hard drive like a messy room.

read the ipod manual thingy and if it says you can do it then do it. if it doesnt say anything i wouldnt do it. if you have problems then just send it back or go to the place where you bought it and ask for advice

Try going on the Ipod website and see if it says anything about it there?

I'd give it a go - you can always restore it.
Check the Apple support forums also - http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa
