I watched a program about this a few months ago, it says our Magnetic Field is decaying and only has a few hundred/thousand years left.

RAPID DECAY OF THE EARTH'S MAGNETIC FIELD
It is known that the earth's magnetic field is decaying faster than any other worldwide geophysical phenomenon. A comprehensive ESSA Technical Report1 gives the values of the earth's magnetic dipole moment (the vector which gives the strength and direction of the magnet) ever since Karl Gauss made the first evaluation in 1835. The evaluations have been made about every 10 or 15 years since then. Each evaluation required accurate worldwide readings over an epoch (a year or so) and special mathematical reduction to "wash" out the "noise." These reliable data clearly show this relatively rapid decay. The report stated that on a straight line basis the earth's magnetic field would be gone in the year 3991 A.D. But decay is exponential and in this case has a half-life of 1400 years.

Exactly my thoughts ^ Why should we care, we're not gonna be 1000 yr old lol

Ok, Let the people 100 - 1000 years later post about it. we will be dead so we dont need to know.

LOL ye what he said ^_^

growth and decay happens all the time. Im sure this is just another cycle

You don't have to read it darling, just don't click it!

we'll lose the moon, and the moon keeps our oceans/tides in check.

so basically, natural disasters will happen all the time.

Who cares, by then we can move to this uber cool planet that they discovered, all fits in time :D

You can't rely on a planet you've just heard about on the news to save us.

50 years ago they said by the year 2000 we'd live on the moon hmm ..

Think it's time people start taking responsibility for their actions instead of saying "oh we'll just move to another planet" I mean come on -_-

Well... i do give a dam kinda... but people are blaming global warming for everything these days! And then scienctists say oh its not its just the earths life changing temp!

What do we believe and what do we ignor?

I don't think the magnetic fields have anything to do with human activity :l

When the Magnetic Field eventually dies, the earth will die, it will become a dead rocky waste land and will lose our atomphere.

Basically we and every other animal here can't live if it dies.

Mars's magnetic field died many years ago, look at it, it's a wasteland.

Bit worrying for our future families when we won't be around. Global warming was going to come anyway not just because us are making it, like flying planes etc. I'm not going to stop flying to go on holiday etc. But Wonder what will happen in the future...

global warming does affect the ozone layer, but i've heard different stories of why the weathers changing. The earth hits an ice age after many many years and then reaches an exothermic stage (i think thts the term) where the world heats up drastically basically i think this is another cycle.

hmm, we'll probably all be killed by one of those metorites that scientists tend to predict, where one is reported that is going to hit the earth and kill us all every 5 years by then anyway

the last major meteor was recorded in 2003 predicted 70 years on the future so 63 years till it hits us. oh well i dont plan to live that long.

Mars isn't in the 'habitable' zone anyway.

It has water on, for all we know creatures on other planets could survive -100 or boiling hot temputures.

Just because we can't doesn't mean others can't.

But we need to find the others first...

Stuff like this is always reported yet never happened.

30 Years ago they said "in 16 years time a meteor much bigger then the earth will wipe out the human race"

that happened ;)..not

Meh, I am prepared to live till I'm 5000 and I am doign well so far. Wish me luck when I get hit by a volcano in a hurricane.

On a less serious note, it won't happen in our life time, so really there is no need to fear. Unless, you are someone who believes in reincarnation, so start worrying now :)

As far as I know, the last meteor that was meant to come and knock us down got dragged away by the immense gravity of Jupiter, where instead of destroying the planet, it made a little dent.

Also could we not just like rub the Earth or something to charge the magnet :8

Very mis-informed documentary, although its not proven conclusively its widely believed this happens quite alot, and the magnetic field inverts every couple of 100 thousand years. (aka gets weaker and weaker till polls switch over positive and negative swap places, so everyones compass's will be backwards)

No big deal :)
