SILVER SLIMLINE PS2 OUT MAY 13

New-colour for slimline PS2 to launch on same day as Xbox 2 MTV showcase airs

Sony has confirmed that a silver satin-finish version of slimline PS2 will release in Europe on May 13. For those keeping tabs on happenings in the console world, this is the same date that the MTV Xbox 2 showcase unveiling Microsoft's next-gen console will air on these shores. What a strange coincidence.

The new PS2 will retail at £114.99 (€159). Sony is also releasing peripherals to complement the model, with the official vertical stand, memory card, Dual Shock 2 controller and DVD remote control being made available in silver satin too.

EIDOS ANNOUNCES E3 LINE-UP

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend bouncing into E3 along with Hitman: Blood Money and more

Eidos has confirmed it's line-up for E3 2005 this afternoon, the list holding no surprises whatsoever - unless the publisher has a few tricks up its sleeve that it doesn't plan to reveal until next month.

Lara Croft's latest outing Tomb Raider: Legend (PS2, Xbox, PC) will appear alongside Agent 47's next mission Hitman: Blood Money (PS2, Xbox, PC), cops 'n' robbers shooter 25 to Life (PS2, Xbox, PC) and the first-person shooter spin-off from the Commandos series Commandos: Strike Force.

"E3 2005 marks the unveiling of the latest instalments of three of the industry's most successful franchises in addition to a first glimpse of two of the most iconic characters, Lara Croft and Agent 47," said Paul Baldwin, Vice President of Marketing, Eidos.

"The Tomb Raider, Hitman and Commandos franchises make highly anticipated returns featuring new engines and dramatically enhanced gameplay features. Additionally, Eidos will be presenting 25 To Life the first to market urban shooter featuring timeless Cops and Robbers gameplay."

Sony to Con PSPs

SCEA is developing an all-new fighting-gambling game exclusively for its handheld.

Though several fighting games are already out for the PSP, October will see an all-new brawler step into the portable ring. Sony Computer Entertainment America announced today. Called The Con, the game is being developed at SCEA's Santa Monica studio, and has not yet been rated or priced.

The Con puts a gritty spin on the fighting genre. It is set in an underworld of no-holds-barred bouts and high-stakes gambling. Players will create a fighter who will specialize in one of five combat styles-- boxing, wrestling, kickboxing, Tae Kwon Do and Jeet Kune Do.

In the game's story mode, players will train their fighters solo or in team of three, which increases the strategic element. Players can also engage in straight head-to-head matches in ad hoc multplayer, which will support up to two players.

The Con also has several features not found in most other fighting games. First is the addition of gambling, which will allow players to bet on their own fights--which they can then deliberately lose to win big. The game also sports an "image import" feature which will allow players to import photos from a PC (via the PSP's Memory Stick Duo) to add to their in-game character.

Next-gen growth starts with PS3, no sooner

Wedbush Morgan says 360 will herald next-gen's starting gun, but good times for game industry not expected until '07.

There's a sales cycle that tends to repeat itself with each new generation of consoles--one marked by slow sales in the months preceding the new generation as gamers save their money in anticipation of the next big thing, and a subsequent spike in sales in the year following the introduction of the new generation.

In a memo assessing the year in gaming so far, Wedbush Morgan ****yst Michael Pachter cautions against viewing the expected fall release of Microsoft's next console as the beginning of the measurable growth in the next-generation cycle.

"We believe that market perception will cause entertainment software stocks to fluctuate within a narrow range until there is better visibility into software demand," Pachter wrote in his memo. "We think that many investors have misinterpreted the launch of the Xbox 360 as the beginning of the next generation, and expect rapid sales growth in 2006. In contrast, we expect the launch of Sony's PS3 (expected in late 2006) to mark the beginning of the next cycle, and think that rapid sales growth will not materialize until 2007."

This means that the early next-generation sales growth many investors are expecting at the beginning of next year won't materialize as gamers hold off on purchases in anticipation of the PlayStation 3 launch.

Elsewhere in the memo, Pachter predicts that console and PC sales will finish the year up 10 percent over 2004, that a price cut for the redesigned PlayStation 2 will be enacted "no later than fall," and that the PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS will have similarly successful years, moving 3.5 million and 3.6 million units, respectively.

Not surprisingly, Pachter believes that the PSP will expand the market beyond the younger audience targeted by the DS. He does extend his outlook of how the PSP will impact the game sector by suggesting any upside to software sales for the PSP will correspond to a decline in software sales for other consoles. "We expect the [PSP] to compete with other consoles for both consumers' time and disposable income," Pachter said

Pachter maintains Buy and Hold recommendations on GameStop and Electronics Boutique stock, respectively, saying that while he thinks the recent proposed merger of the two companies is mutually beneficial, it is possible (though unlikely) that the Federal Trade Commission will challenge the merger based on EB's overwhelming concentration in the used games market in the United States.

Overall, Pachter sees little volatility for the companies he covers, saying, "Publisher stock will likely trade in a narrow range over the next few months, due to uncertainty surrounding the impact of the introduction of the Microsoft Xbox 360 console."

So while '05 is looking strong, based on Pachter's assumptions of "a combination of strong release schedule, easy comparisons, and the PSP launch," according to Pachter, the future is less clear. "We think that many investors will be lulled into a false sense of security, causing software publisher stocks to appreciate during the middle part of the year," but then hitting more difficult times in the back of the year. Comps will be "difficult," says Pachter, and "consumer reaction to the Xbox 360 launch may disappoint," leading to share prices that could languish or decline. "We believe that publisher stocks may decline once the summer malaise begins, and once a greater number of investors adopt our thesis that 2006 is the console transition year folks."

I got all this for today hope you liek dan
