I agree "indie" which is meant to be independant and unknown is for some reason the label of modern light rock bands who are internationally famous. And as for pop-rock, EUGH.
I am to be honest, not a fan of classic rock too much. I prefer modern heavy rock like Disturbed, Three Days Grace, and of course, the greatest band in the world, Breaking Benjamin.

The thing is, with genres it's not what itunes(piece of crap) or whatever you use brands it as, it's what the artists/band actually are.

ACTUALLY, Disturbed PUBLICALLY CLASSED THEMSELVES as heavy rock, and said that they do not fall into the metal genre. Breaking Benjamin are predominantly heavy rock as well as post-grunge and alternative and Three Days Grace are the same.
So thanks for your wrong information, pal. But I know music, and I know those three particular bands better than most. Hell, I personally know Ben Burnley.

Independent means independent label. It has nothing to do with how well known you are or what you sound like. Arctic Monkeys had the fastest selling debut album in UK history last year but they're still indie because they're on Domino which is an independently owned label. Indie bands are seen as "unknown" because they have much less marketing and in general have a non radio-friendly style.
Classic Rock is super overrated.

The same reason every genre sounds the same. You're just hearing what's on the radio; Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand etc. These are just indie bands that have a much more accessible and radio-friendly style and are much more commonly known, but certainly do not speak for the entire indie genre. True, but seriously... it's old. And thats pretty much the reason that it is influential. They were just at the start of this whole music revolution. There wasen't much to turn to.
And The Beatles alone had almost as many songs as everything from the 90's put together on the Rolling Stone "500 Greatest Songs" list, classic rock wasen't that great.

scratch below the surface and you'll find music that's just as good and better as anything released 30 or 40 years ago. most of the "classic rock" bands only really became extremely popular after they split up, anyway. the top 40 is designed for young audiences and therefore tends to suck.

Deftones, they've inspired tons of new bands
Classic rock is classic rock for a reason, it's the past, yea some people enjoy it, I still occassionaly like to hear the odd Queen song but when that stuff came out it may of been great but now it's just classic, to a large amount of bands I've seen about music is more about who is the best at the intrument they play, Jimi Hendrix WAS good but now he's gone, he's not the best, it's just too many people think music JUST has to be based on what the song is about, meaning is a good thing about the song because then it's just not random stupidity but music is changing and meaning isn't a huge part of it anymore, some bands may still include meaning into the songs they write but half of the time they think of something, make it sound good and play it

They're a good band- but hmm.. I guess it's like a defining feature in the band? Hard to put into words, I suppose a great band- ie great musicians and a great sound:
Led zeppelin for example:
Robert plant- fantastic vocalist
Jimmy Page- one of the greatest guitarists (top 10 of 100 of all time i think.)
John Paul Jones: Very good bassist and also provided other instruments into the songs too
Bonzo: Incredibly drummer- #2 of all time - I'd say #1 but bah :P
There's a fair few of modern bands I like and would listen too but I don't really see any as "wow that's incredible" with the exception of foo fighters/aerosmith/white stripes/the stones (if i'm classing them as still alive- i'm sure they're doing voodoo to keep themselves alive :P)

So if we're gonna go onto great musician(s) making up a band to be incredible/influencing then lets do it that way.
Slipknot - Incredible drummer, fast and good technique.

Jonny Greenwood being the main one (watch this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyKCwDJ7ZUc) and show me where you've heard something like it). Nah, he actual was a pretty decent guitarist, there's some demos and live tapes of him warming up and he really is pretty good, he just doesn't play like that in their actual songs. He claimed he couldnt write.

Gym class heroes are growing on me and i'm hating myself because of it :(:P
I sort of agree with you there.. you're only giving like an "incredible drummer" though.. there's not a good combination kind of thing? I like greenday/bit of slipknot and blink 182, wouldn't rate them incredibly high though- I prefer corey's stone sour stuff compared to slipknots
Well I was in a rush and only thought of decent drummers that came to mind. In my opinion Slipknot has some rather talented members on each of the instruments, not just Joey(although he is reknowned) there are also members like Mick Thompson who plays the guitar really well. Slipknot really did change metal and brought this nu-metal scene into metal and many bands were influenced.
Rage Against The Machine - They had some great musicians especially on guitar from Tom Morello. Influenced a lot of bands and also did something that most bands haven't and didn't do at the time. They changed a lot of music and influenced plenty of bands. Another band that are fairly recent and have impacted music.
RHCP - I can't ******* stand this band. However many people do like their music, quite a different style of music it is aswell with those funky beats(But man are they are a pile of *****). Despite me not liking the band, they have a good balance of musicians allover. Their bassist(Flea) is world reknowned for his style of bass mainly as he is great at slapping. Their drummer is also very good and has quite a different style as he includes a lot of funk into this 'funk-rock' band. And the vocalist Anthony Keidis, he has a very distinct voice but also is very dynamic in the way he can change the tone and beat of his voice for their very different songs/albums.
I have just named 3 bands and given a fairly good description, all of which have impacted music and THEIR genre of music they play. Although I didn't describe them, Blink 182, Green Day and Radiohead are other clear and fine examples of bands that have not only influenced many bands but changed the whole genre they play in and set the standards high. In response to Ezzie and how "classic rock bands gave so much more" well sure they did, but most musicians have moved on. Most bands today won't be influenced by musicians from these classic rock bands. That's because this classic rock isn't around much and people are having much more defined music genres in the way that they play. You can call those classic rock bands great and sure they influenced many people, but don't deny that those bands I have listed have influenced many people aswell as also bringing a new standard to their music genre.
Ezzie.
25-05-2007, 01:22 PM

Kind of.. :S blink 182 did alot for their genre I guess, but hendrix/led zepp did so much for their genre - so much more than blink 182 man.. Hendrix has inspired so many guitarists it's unbelievable.
Hendrix also changed peoples views on rock, bought blues into the lime light and was the greatest guitarist (in mine and many others opinions)
So how can you say blink 182 did so much compared to hendrix? :S

Yes, we get it, when everyone was high, drunk, getting in fights with other band members and making the lamest music video ever, it was much more fun. But get with the times. Well considering led zepp disbanded because of bonzo's death- if bonzo was still here they'd still be rocking now most likely.
Also:
"Led Zeppelin IV is the fourth best-selling album in history, having sold more than 22 million copies, and four other albums by the band – Physical Graffiti, Led Zeppelin II, Houses of the Holy and Led Zeppelin - also rank among the all-time top 100"
http://www.rockhall.com/inductee/led-zeppelin
They've had such an impact on music, album sales, inspired many people, (not too sure if the whole of the band has) but jimmy page is in the music hall of fame.

I'm sorry but I just don't agree with that at all.. I enjoy what is classified as "classic rock" and will rate it highly for it's impact upon music. But if you were to take a look at my music taste you'd notice that I love the new music scenes going on right now, and I would easily say that some of the music being created is to the standard of some of the older music people have listed. So for you to say that basically people who enjoy and rate "classic rock" highly are outdated is a bit wrong.

I fail to see how White Stripes are part of this 'Classic Rock' scene? That thought just makes me laugh infact. I also fail to see how Rolling Stones are "alive" in their scene. I'm not sure whether they are still composing music but if they are then it shows how "reknowned" they are for their newer music. Hell you can rate Rolling Stones highly for their style of music, but it's all the past songs (Sympathy for the devil was a tune) and if they are still creating music then they really do fail to grab much attention from it. I must agree Enter Shikari are original and it's very experimental, but just because a lot of bands/artists fit in the same genre doesn't make them any less original. Queen, Led Zepp, Status Quo and bands like that all fall under the genre of 'classic rock' but that doesn't mean each band isn't original.

Yeah I agree with you man, must've got mixed up in previous posts- my apologies, I agree- the music industry has got worse (imo) just many clones on mtv/radio= heck even kerrang has started showing pop rock/pop every other song
There are some incredibly diverse bands out there- foo fighters/enter shikari *shudders*/stone sour (slipknot+softy touchy music=win)/evanescence/I suppose Green Day... though i'm getting sick of them :P/ Also Finnish rock sounds awesome in a few bands.

kerrang has nearly always made its money out of pop/rock. for example they regard marilyn manson to be a "god" and rhcp to be "the most important band on the planet." both are radio-friendly poppy rocky alternativey stuff. plus, i havent read kerrang in 4 years. i only ever bought 2 copies then they had the "rasmus" on the cover so i didnt bother getting it. another example of a poprock band.

I was talking about the white stripes as in carrying on the sort of "classic rock" genre but with a fresh style..
The stones are still touring you know? Just because they don't release a new single every week doesn't mean they've retired
Also where did I ever say Queen Status Quo Led zepp weren't all different from another? Your argument is really flawed :S
I actually did say I wasn't sure whether they were around or not, once again you fail to properly read our arguments properly(RedStratocas also pointed out you have a problem to read properly) and you have just once again done it. White Stripes aren't classic rock, hell they aren't even "carrying on the classic rock genre with a fresh style" cos not only would it not be classic rock because of the date, but if it had a fresh style it wouldn't be classic rock. Thus making this argument "flawed" as you liked to say about mine. I did say I was unsure if the Rolling Stones were still around making music. I didn't say they weren't at any stage or say they were "retired" like you seem to have made up me saying. However, it does show the RS are definately losing it if they aren't receiving enough publicity from their tour because I for one didn't know they were on tour and I know about most artists who tour cos I regularly vist aloud.com so I know who's touring. About originality, you said:
Music just seems to be bland.. everyone's copying each other kind of, still a few good bands out there, just seems like music needs a kick in the right direction: more original bands etc
Well surely you are calling most "classic rock" bands bland. Because a lot of them copied eachother in the sense of style & genre. Big guitar solos, that whiney singing and the rock lifestyle. So you are saying everyones copying eachother - meaning that they are bland - as you stated. I will enjoy your "argument" back which probably has mis-read about half of it so I then need to re-state it.
how can you have a modern style classic rock.
i thought classic rock was a term to describe rock bands of old, not an actual genre

"big guitar solos"-most had their own style actually, maybe a few were copying each other, but they weren't the "highly acclaimed sorts"
Whiney Singing? Sorry not every singer is like Axl rose- Freddy Mercury? Robert Plant (whiney to some)?
Also, if you're so worried about me getting the wrong end of the stick perhaps you should learn to write properly instead of giving jumbled up meanings :)

Probably about 90-95% of music videos are better now purely based on technology changes and how much a band/artist spends on music videos.
Your opinion. Just because a video costs alot, doesn't make it good. I think that older videos are much better.
I was talking to people who say "music then was better than it is now"-- and if you are one of those people, yes, you do need to get with the times. Im not telling you what to listen to, that was my point in the first place actually.

Yeah I don't think Gangsta rap will be in the game since the death of them 2, however I'm still hoping for something and despite most people hating him(I actually really like him), 50 Cent & The Game's current "beef" is a start. There's not half as much violence, though there is violence, but some of the lyrics coming from these 2 is absolutely sick. The hip hop scene at the moment is great, what you liking about it?

I don't really like the beef lyrics between them 2. It used to be alright (The Game's "Ghost Unit" album is EXCELLENT!) but The Game's new album would of been so much better if he hadn't felt the need to namedrop all the time. As for 50, he's got a new album out soon. High hopes for that one :]

My point is that no one should be ttell what they should be listening to. Listen to caveman music from 2000 BC for all I care
(the second one was badly worded, but you can make out what I meant.
All I said was:
never say that music as a whole has gotten better or worse.
Because it hasn't. Music changes. Listen to you want, if all you listen to is old music, good for you, have a cookie. But you don't need to go around people listening to new music of today telling them about the good old days. Because no one wants to hear it. The past is gone, get over it, there's some new stuff around, and much of it is just as creative as anything anyone else has ever produced.

I'd just like to note (a few days late, sorry I've been away) that White Stripes are not in any way classic rock or a modern update of it. They are rock, simple as that. In fact, White Stripes' music is a pretty clear indication of how modern rock can be just as good if not better than classic rock.
It also seems that classic rock fanboys seem to have an irrational fear or hatred of hiphop/rap except for "old stuff like Run DMC", because as everyone knows, it's cool to like Run DMC but not anyone recent, and of course gangster rap is off-limits because it's OMGZ TALENTLESS N U USE A COMPUTER!!!!

(Most) gangster rap flows a lot better than "old school" hiphop, and I find it to be much more powerful too - and for me that's great, because I like power music.
Classic rock - intricate musical style, solos etc., singer with wide range of notes
White Stripes - back to basics simplistic band, singer who is very much different to anyone else
