Bah notepad.exe is bad, no syntax highlighting, you cant drag text and you cant indent properly. Dont use it.
Just go for one of the innurable number of free text apps that feature code highlighting etc.
Im guessing notepad + (http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/about.php ) seeming to be the favorite of people here :)

Get an older version of Dreamweaver and see if that works? :) If not try frontpage or just use notepad, or a similar application that is slightly more advanced.

I use Frontpage and Notepad ++
Why?
Frontpage: It has FTP in it and it handles PHP, HTML, ASP (I Think) & it has loads of other stuff
Notepad ++: Because its just better then Notepad

But .. people who use frontpage fail at webdesign.
I use frontpage and i when i take my time, it comes out perfect but if i rush it totally messes up.
You need to put time into it thats all

No, it makes him sane.... or at least less masochistic. *shudders at thought of the 100s of lines of useless meta-tags and invalid markup*
Gah, i think id prefer just note pad, that doesn't take the liberty to rewrite half your code when you click something.

I was cool before the talk of php editors came into it. Using frontpage at all is laughable. Here is my proof:
But .. people who use frontpage fail at webdesign.

I now use Zend Editor; it's quite good for coding. Before Dan introduced me to it I used Dreamweaver CS3/v8 or Notepad++
