From Joystiq

It is the duty of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) to classify or rate any films or video games before they are released in the UK -- if they are indeed deemed fit for release. After spending some time strangling strangers (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/30/first-manhunt-2-screens-depict-wiimote-enabled-depravity/) and stabbing psychopaths in Rockstar (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Rockstar/)'s Manhunt 2, it seems the BBFC are none too pleased by the game's content, rejecting it for certification entirely. This means that Manhunt 2 (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/manhunt2) may not be legally supplied anywhere in the UK.

MCV (http://www.mcvuk.com/news/27545/BBFC-rejects-Manhunt-2) quotes the BBFC's director David Cooke as saying, "Rejecting a work is a very serious action and one which we do not take lightly. Where possible we try to consider cuts or, in the case of games, modifications which remove the material which contravenes the Board's published Guidelines." With the game already filled with all manner of cuts, slashes and eviscerations, the BBFC could simply not see a way around the game's "unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone" and its "sustained and cumulative casual sadism."

With Rockstar being no stranger to controversy (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/jackthompson), we half expect those quotes to show up on the back of the box. Then again, publisher Take-Two is unlikely to let an entire country of wallets just slip from its grasp, so there may yet be an appeal or a round of strict censorship. The Wii, PS2 and PSP game is still en route to America though and it shouldn't be long before we all learn whether UK gamers have been robbed... or rescued.

Not bothered if it's not coming to the UK as Manhunt was dull. The fun of running around and brutally murdering people, YAYS WHAT A GAME!
Crap game, think it's good it isn't coming out. ;)

You'll get the police at your door if you're not careful :P

Wow this is lame. I have no plans to get the game (or a Wii) but I hate the fact that the doctrine of "free speech" is being denied. We really don't need these draconian controls on what we watch or listen to... Violent movies aren't bad so why do games get treated different? Studies have shown that violent games have less of an effect on us than violent movies anyway.

Manhunt is a stupid game, Rockstars table tennis game was more interesting than the first Manhunt game, I don't think a game should be banned before it's even released but oh well, I'm not bothered

Unecessary sequel, but does anyone else not find this absolutely pathetic? When you consider that films like Saw and Hostel come closer to the real thing than Manhunt ever will?

I also thought the first Manhunt was excellent one of my favourtie ever games.

The difference between movies and video games is that in the latter, you are in control, and it is you, the player, who is committing the murders and such, that is why these censorship groups have a problem.

SAW's violence is more than acceptable by the board. There are many, many movies that do not get accepted for release.

Finally, Manhunt was a good game - it had an original story and it's violence was both shocking and fun. I look forward to the sequel, as I will be getting it, regardless of it's UK ban.

No, the first wasn't banned in the UK. It was banned in two countries, but out of Europe. The reason it received the ban anyway was because a British student was stabbed and killed in school, in the UK, with the killer saying that he was acting out Manhunt.

For starters, of course you can import it.

That is also, not the way I will get it.

But the BBFC itself published a study they had carried out that showed games actually have less influence on players than movies do on viewers.

It's ridiculous and a sure flaw in their reasoning to ban Manhunt.

Personally I don't even want to play the game, I'd just it rather not be dictated to me that I can't play it. Surely the public deserves freedom of choice?
