Snakes..

I've always wanted a pet snake and everything, I know where I can buy one and all the parts for it but I was just wondering, are they expensive to keep? like the cost of the food and everything you need to buy along with the snake?

Get a cornsnake, they basically look after thereselves - And only grow to about 5-6ft.

I've had mine 3 years and it's about 6ft and basically harmless!

The snake itself should cost no more than £30 - Then obviousaly you want a baby, so you either buy a little tank to start with - Or save £20 and just go straight for a big one - Our tank was £200 but it's a beast of a tank lol..

A bit of wood, waterbowl and somewhere for it to hide is all it will need - Oh and a heat mat as they are used to the african heat :P - They feed on baby mice or rats.. "Pinkies" are for baby snakes which are about 20p each - My snake is on fully grown rats with are about 70p.. Downside is, they have to be kept in the freezer :P

To get you started, i'd say about £60!

Sorry but if you get a baby snake and stick it in a large tank your more than likey going to stress the snake out causing it to attack you most of the time. Also i wudnt recomend a heat mat as some snakes tend to just sit ther and burn them selfs unless you put the heat mat on the side of the tank then it shud be fine. If im rite in thinking most snakes only eat once a month or sumthing like that.

Anyway you best off doing loads of reasearch before you even go get the stuff for it.

Cornsnakes adapt easily to any environment - Small or large ;)

If there was no heat mat, the snake would die.. It's used to the heat of Africa.. They won't burn themselves, you put it below the woodchippings.. My snake spends most of its time on top of that - So it must be needed.

I feed my snake a rat every week, apart from when it's shedding..

My advise to you when your snake is shedding is leave it alone, especially when it's eyes are covered.. I learnt the hard way, I got bit.

I used to have a python, it got as long as our living room... so we had to give it to southport zoo.

Your supposed to have the heat mat at one end of the tank, so as there is two different temperature regions at each side of that tank. That way when the snakes hot it can go to the cooler area and vise versa.

My cousin is onto his second snake now. :)
