Tottenham have signed England striker Darren Bent from Championship outfit Charlton for a club record £16.5m. The 23-year-old passed a medical on Thursday and signed a deal for up to six years, with the transfer fee being paid in instalments.
Bent said: "Tottenham have a lot of young English players and it's a young squad, it's a squad going forward and that's the direction I wanted to take. It's exciting times for me and Spurs and hopefully I'll show what I can do."
Bent's former club Ipswich will also benefit from the move, as they inserted a 20% sell-on clause when the striker moved to Charlton. The Suffolk club will receive £2.58m. paid in three instalments over two years. Bent will be out to establish himself in the England squad after making just two starts and one substitute appearance for his country.
Personally I think it is a lot of money. Yes, he is a proven Premiership player, he's young and he's English, but I still think it's a huge sum of cash to pay for a striker of his calibre, especially when we already have 3 excellent strikers at the club.

and £27m for Torres!
I think what it boils down to is that Henry is 29 years old and only has a few years left in his prime, whereas Bent is still getting better and could still be a top level striker for up to another decade.

yea good point i think he'll get into double figures next season
thing is now you have bent, berbatov, keane, defoe good competition for places but whoever doesnt get in the team week in week out is going to become unsettled and unhappy....
Keane to celtic hopefully!
Sure, bent has potential, but not 16.5m potential
Spurs could've got a couple of decent players for that

It seems even more when you think that Everton paid something like £8.5m for Andy Johnson last season. As far as I know they're about the same age and the same kind of player? Unproven for England, but good Premiership goalscorers.

A brilliant signing for Spurs, though I'm surprised he didn't move to West Ham after all the speculation and with Curbs being there. Anyway, I think it's ideal for him, having the likes of Berbatov, Keane & Defoe to work with. He's a proven goalscorer in this league and imo he'll only get better having to contend with that lot. Spurs are getting stronger and stronger. Top 4 finish? Higher than Arsenal next season? It's gonna be interesting :D

Hell yeah it will be, especially with Arsenal losing Henry. It's gonna be excellent :)

No idea why spurs need another striker.. they need some defenders & midfielders more.. They've already got 3 more than capable strikers.. a 4th is just gonna' make selection even more difficult for Jol.
Unless this is a signing to replace a possible future move for Berbatov?

how can you even begin to suggest defoe is better than bent? just look at the premiership scoring records.
LOL @ THIS!
Henry went for 16 million but bent went to spurs for 16.5 million, doesn't make sense.

henry. but he is older, and only has a few years left at his best and will start losing it.
bent on the other hand is still getting better and still has upto ten years left playing at the top level if he keeps progressing like he is.

If you went on that in football, you would have a brilliant team for 1 or 2 seasons, yet a lack of youth to keep the club at that level
Imo good signing.

What made you come up with that? He is supposed to be signing a three year contract this month, although that means nothing, he is still going nowhere.
Bent's a great goalscorer, 37 goals in 2 seasons in the Premiership, 15 goals last season even with an injury-plagued season. Great buy.
