How would you go about doing this? Creating a site similar to E-Buddy or Meebo.com. What do you do to connect and all that?

Thanks,
Nick.

I'm not sure if this is true but I heard that you have to get premission from microsoft/MSN to connect to there server using your own program.

That could be true as I've always thought that they must need permission to access the users database and other stuff like that.

You mean like SIM ?
God no. I mean actually connecting to MSN Messenger, except via the web. Websites like e-buddy.com

You would need to code an interface then pay MSN to allow you to connect to their server.

If you download such msn clients as pidgin, amsn etc you can look at how they connect to the msn network, by doing this you can use it in your site to do so..

It requires extensive knowledge of MSNP (Microsoft Network Protocol). As there is no API or documentation published by Microsoft, it would require reverse engineering by using some kind of packet sniffer.

Nick: You'd require to know MSP and also, you'd need permission from Microsoft. :)

theres a script called qmsn (google it) that works to make an online messenger but you need to find the correct url and ports to connect it

I dont think you need any special permission from MS to connect to the msn network, just use compilent protacol. Theres plenty of tutorials and apps about on how to do it, plus i belive theres also alot of detailed developers documention avaible from microsofts site itself.
You may need a developers key or somthing like that, as you would say if you wanted to use the google API's, but in the case of msn i think you can just connect to it. As long as you use the protacol correcectly it should work fine. Although i could be wrong "/

I'm standing strong with my thoughts on needing permission. You can't paint someones house without their permission, pretty much the exact same thing.

Would you like me to come paint your house, haters? =D

i think mentor is correct but i guess that is basically getting permission. i'm pretty sure you have to get a devolpers key.

You need permission to access the database but not to let the user submit the details and then let MSN give you access.
