It means its better to stop at your peak than to get progressively worse. Because everyone is remembered for what they last did. Nirvana wouldn't be nearly as famous if Kurt Cobain kept living and made a few more albums that weren't as good as their most popular ones. He immortalized them by killing himself and stopping it at their peak.

Not saying that's the reason he killed himself though.
