I want my hair chemically straightened, my mum's said no for the time being because she said it will damage my hair, so I need to convince her.

Will it REALLY damage my hair that much?

it's not worth it.
the only place i'd ever get my hair chemically straightened in is Japan, or a Japanese parlour that specializes in it.
I study hairdressing at college & have naturally curly (afro, tight ringletts) hair, and concidered this myself.
But tbh, it's not worth the risk of it going wrong since if they don't nuralize it right when it will either not hold and your hair will all break off, or if the setting lotion isn't washed off properly it'll lock into weird shapes.
Afterall it is chemically re-building your hair.
In my opinion, it's not worth the risk of losing all your hair, or having hair so porus and frizzy that you'll end up having the straighten it to take the frizz out anyway.

got mine done, sister did it free as she got the stuff really cheap as shes a hairdresser and it worked really well. i had really curly hair naturally and i used to spend ages straightening my hair, i still have to straighten it but only a little bit to style it how i want it, it worked really well, it probably is bad for your hair but it cant be worse than straightening it loads every day.

If it had good results all the time, then I don't see it as being lazy..
I want it done so I can do more things instead of spending an hour straightening my hair lol...

I have really thick hair, so it's a pain in the backside.

And thanks for the advice above so much!

I don't think i'll bother now, I guess i'll just put up with it.

Thin your hair often, layer it often, 2-3 weeks and you'll be alright :S

haha, my hair is as thin as it will go, I have really short layers as it is, I want to grow them out a little bit so I can tie them back.

Trust me haha, I have really freakishly thick hair.

I had it done because my hair is really thick.. like they had to use the really strong one on it.

If your hair is thick then it won't damage your hair that much as long as you don't get it done loads, it's better than just straightening it loads

No, it isn't.
It's the most damaging thing you can do to your hair, along with perming, which is the same process.
If you straighten your hair with a good serum to moisturise it, and heat protectant then straightening doesn't have much affect on the hair.

i know the feeling.

my mum asked her hairdresser about it for me, and he said he wouldn't allow me to do it because i've dyed my hair before, and apparantly it damages your hair so much that doing it on dyed hair can cause lots of it to break/fall out.
i wouldn't do it.

and people saying straightening is just as bad, no, if you use the proper treatments with straightening it isn't that bad.

yeah, my mum told me that there is one that you can have done if you haven't had your hair dyed for a year/there is no hair dye in your hair whatsoever, and it doesn't damage it so much.
I don't know if she was lying or not though, to stop me from dying my hair etc.

yeah, it's true.
And about having really thick hair, i really know how you feel aha. My hairs pretty much the worst hair you can get, when not straightened theres no point in even attempting to get a comb through it.
But you can buy yourself some thinning scissors for a couple of dollars and just whip them through your hair, also, if when you straighten your hair you use a serum (frizz-ease thermal protection serum is the best, since it saves you using a heat protectant aswell) then it takes about half the time and effort, which really helps when you have to do it everyday (:

Haha, my hair looks terrible curly, the bottom layer looks fine, but once my short layers come into play it makes it stick out... maybe if/when I grow my layers out/longer than it might look fine.

yeah, it's true.

I think the thinning scissors might be a good idea :D
I should buy some.. I already use a heat protectant on my hair when I straighten it
