Well generally when a group of people are in a group together, give themselves a name and release musical material you usually assume they are a band, which infact I think they are.

In my eyes, a band is a group of people, or solo artist that make their own music and write their own songs. I personally say they're a Group, not a band.

A band plays their own instruments, a group just sings, so they're a group.

No because bands play music and what they do isn't music in my opinion.

i class anything that makes music that isn't a solo artist as a band normally, so yeah i'd say they are.

They do not play any instruments, they are effectively all just singers working alongside session musicians that are most likely more talented in 'music' than girls aloud are. same with boyzone, take that, you get the gist. and just to clarify, i dont agree with the 'groups' :)

where does the whole band "plays instruments" come from? i was just under the impression band was a collective term for people who stick together? i mean you get a "band of brothers" they aren't strumming up a guitar are they?

but yeah, i would vote they're a three-headed minotaur. the title of this thread, to me, is pretty ******ed.

Band
2. Music.
a. a group of instrumentalists playing music of a specialized type: rock band; calypso band; mariachi band.

so i guess by definition they aren't. but that isnt to take anything away from them really. many people dont consider drum machines instruments, and plenty of bands use only that and are amazing.

A musical ensemble (band) is a group of two or more musicians who perform instrumental or vocal music. In each musical style or genre, different norms have developed for the sizes and composition of different ensembles, and for the repertoire of songs or musical works that these ensembles perform.

Most of their songs - 78% - are someone elses songs they glammed up.
Jump for my love - 1996

Its not really a band. Just a group of people who sing over other songs.

i voted yes.. i know they don't play their own music.

and i don't know why but they could be referred to as a 'girl band' and it wouldn't sound weird so yeh.

To officially be classed as a band, you need instruments within a group. Those which just feature vocalists are "groups".

YoManGo!

actually they do have backing instrumentalists within their band; even though you may not see them they are still paid and treated as a band member =/
