Now, I don't know if this is how Work Experience is for other schools, seeing as i've never been to one, but my school is different to like... every other school in the world (only 3 periods a day, finish at 1.30 on some days, every student has their own laptop).

The KS4 Internship Programme is an innovative way of replacing the traditional 2 week work placement that students do during their last 2 years at school. Rather than having just one experience of the place of work, we offer our students 5 placements throughout the 2 years. All students from the age of 14 are required to do work-related learning as part of the curriculum and our thinking is that there is no better place to learn about the world of work than to actually be in the world of work.

At the start of Year 10, when the students are 14 going on 15 they start their first placement, which lasts until Christmas. Then each term they change placements, so that each student gains experience of an Admin, ICT, Retail and then 2 vocational areas of work. Throughout the 2 years the students then have a good idea of what their strengths and weaknesses are and they will have covered a wide range of tasks and skills, equipping them to go confidently into the world of work. They complete their placement every Friday and they last for 10-12 weeks.

Basically, every Friday for two years, at five different places.

that's what it's like at my school in yr 13.
you chose a place per term, and work for like 2 hours a week there during free periods.

we call it "work shadowing" tho.
and it's not compulsory.

nope. mine was where you work at a place for 2 weeks with no pay, and thats it.

you apply for the place through the careers guy at our school and he contacts the place for you etc. i just had 2 weeks in morrisons :eusa_danc

oh, i've jsut read that quote you put and i did work experience last year, so it probably changed for you, well im glad i only had to do it for 2 weeks and not 2 years every week

i was supposed to do two weeks before we broke up for holiday, but i just said i was working with my mom & had an extra two weeks off (:
it's stupid that they tried to make me do it anyway, i already work in a hairdressers 8-4 on wednesday & friday as part of my college course, so i didn't see a point in doing it.

and yeah, chc were talking about that when i was there, i don't know why they have to do everything differently tbh.

we do it every term in yr 10 & 11. once every thursday 12:30 till whatever time the job finishes. most people[including me] just go home though, it's easier lol. then once the term has done, you find a new placement for the following term.

One week in Year Ten - you get to choose where you go. Your work experience sounds like something people would follow if they planned to follow a less academic and more vocational career.

To people moaning about doing it, it helps. On your CV it will count as a Ref. :)

I did mine in july, it was only meant to be for a week but i did it for 3weeks lol, i did for the last 3 weeks of term, only went in on the last day for a hour to get my stuff :P Everyoen else did 1week and i got paid for 2weeks :P Its really good tho cause it shows my determination for my cv and going for college places and that. You MUST have it and keep it to almost defo get a place.

Has anyone actually done any work experience that was good? I'm trying to find someone to help me with a magazine article about it and I'm really stuck. Can anyone help?
