VPS's are a bit like master resellers. You can have them managed, semi-managed or unmanaged.

VPS is like your own little server. It acts and feels like a server but its running on a powerful server hosting many Virtual Private Servers. You can install and run anything you like on it. They are more expensive than normal shared hosting, but cheaper than a dedicated server.

Some VPS hosts allow it and some dont.

I pay around £25 per month for 40GB space. But you can get cheaper.

I can't think of one that won't allow you to run a Shoutcast server. Its not like you share your resources with other users. Each VPS is totally isolated from other Virtual Private Servers. However some hosts may not allow you to host IRC servers or IRC bots. Nealy all hosts won't allow illegal content.

Its not all about the space. Mainly is about how much RAM you get, as the more RAM you have the more applications you can run. If you have a very small amount of RAM most applications will become unstable.

You can expect to pay anything from £10-£300+ depending on the specs.

If I was paying £300+ then I would buy a dedicated server :P

Plus you can get them cheaper than £10. You'll find it hard to get a manged server for under £20 per month though. If you don't feel confident with manging a server your self, then I recommend you stick to shared hosting. If something goes wrong you'll be stuck with sorting it.

What you mean by managed?

If something goes wrong or you need help with something, your hosting company will do it for you.

Lets say your webserver broke and you were on a unmanaged package you would need to fix the problem yourself, however, if you were on a managed package you could get your hosting company to do it for you - free of charge.

Cheapest is self-managed.

One of my vps is self managed. I had to install everything (PHP, Apache, MySql, Firewall etc etc) And if something stops working I have to fix it my self.

You should really only get self managed if you know what your doing.

I have another VPS which is semi-managed, and what they do is, install/set up anything. If i get a problem they will fix it. and anything else i want, ive got to install.

And then fully managed, you basicaly pay them to so everything - Most expensive)
