yarrr, it is confusing. indie is really any band that is on an independent record label [the arcade fire, arctic monkeys etc], but now it can include anyone who used to be on an independent label but moved to a major label but has still maintained their sound [modest mouse, death cab for cutie, snow patrol etc]

technically, indie isnt really a sound, more of an idea. even the most mainstream-sounding band can be indie. but weird-sounding bands generally go on indie labels because major labels won't sign them.

I found a version of their album which has the back cover in upside down and it was £5 more expensive than the others cos of that.

Indie is actually the one style of music I really don't like to listen to. I find it pretty boring, there's just no special thing to it.

true. but it's not the idea that has changed, more it's turned into an entire scene.

indie really isnt a sound, but sounds have come out of it. you guys in the uk think of indie as a sound like arctic monkeys and kaiser chiefs and all that jazz. but american indie is really, really, really diverse.
