Air rage smoker jailed for attack
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/44144000/jpg/_44144532_robinson203.jpg
A 53-year-old man who terrified fellow passengers on board a holiday flight and assaulted an air steward has been jailed for 12 months. Stephen Robinson clambered over seats to hit his victim after being told to put out a cigarette on the Thomas Cook Turkey to Newcastle flight in March.
He admitted endangering the safety of the aircraft and causing actual bodily harm, at Newcastle Crown Court.
Robinson of Hope Town Lane, Darlington, forced the plane to be diverted.
Terrified people
The hearing on Friday heard how Robinson clambered over other passengers in his row of seats.
In the melee an airline steward was hit in the face and his teeth were damaged.
The busy Boeing 757, from Antalya to Newcastle, was diverted to Frankfurt, where Robinson was removed from the aeroplane.
Recorder Brian Forster QC said: "You terrified the people who were about you and you made the life of the aircraft crew very difficult."

Wow, the things you fail at list grows longer.
Yeah, you all fail to see that it "COULD HAVE" happened, but did anybody on the plane die? He only hit a steward for telling him to put a cigarette out, I find people with a short temper humorous; even if it was in this sort of situation, too. A year is enough.

it could have been a lot worse than it was.
and i really dont think that you'd be perfectly happy sitting there watching some man terroise others on an airplane.

^ No, it's not.
@Matt Again, the phrase "could have" appears - but it wasn't worse than it was. I'd be humored, actually. Better than the movies they show, anyway.

He only hit a person who is responsbile for the safety of the other 200+ passengers onboard?
He was in a state of rage and could have done anything, smoking is strictly prohibited onboard all flights - He decided to totally ignore this lawful command and persisted to do so.
Passengers are reminded that the captain is in command of the aircraft and his/her lawful commands must be obeyed - To which he totally disregarded.

There isn't just one air steward, so that remark is clearly void. Thats the point, he could have done anything - he ONLY punched an air steward, generally because he wasn't going to comply with the request. Smoking may be prohibited, I'm sure sex in the loo's is too, but does it stop people? I think not.
It wasn't worse than it was, stop trying to make out like it's a huge deal because it definitely isn't.

It is a huge deal :)
A 757 is operated with a 8 crew configuration, 6 cabin crew and 2 flight deck crew. With 1 down that leaves 5 cabin crew members avaliable to help in an emergency situation - The bare minimum for a 757 is 6, in order to open emergency exits if passengers cannot do it for whatever reason.
He punched a cabin crew member, which is totally unacceptable, he refused to put his cigarette out which is also unacceptable - Both endangering the safety of everybody onboard that aircraft.

You're not telling it how it is, you're telling it how you want it to be. Get over the fact that someone got punched, maybe the guy said it in a tone that the convicted guy didn't like, or misinterpreted the way he said it. I'm humored by what he did, he didn't really put it in danger and nothing major happened.

Lol i don't know how many flights you have been on where there are rebels sparking up a cigarete.

A year is long enough, he will probably get bummed and punched a few times, so he will have learnt his lesson by the time he comes out.
They will probably ban him from flying with that airline again.
If i was on the plane i would leave him fight while i finish his cigarette then join in chanting..

He got 12 months because he admitted it. If he didn't he would of got about 13 "/ knowing Britain's standards.
Anyway, it's not a big crime, it's not as if he was going straight to the cockpit to kill the pilots OR blowing the plane up with a bomb he had attached to himself.
The cigarette could have been used as a bomb, ok not as explosive but it could of started a fire.. so that was just as bad

Always a chance you could crash the plane, you're not that competant.
But then, theres always a chance of crashing a car?
Im sure I wouldn't crash an aircraft, however with some kind of technical difficulty the aircraft might become uncontrolable or something.
