View Full Version : Drinking age 21?
Sorry if this has been posted before...
Just wondering if anyone has heard anything about the drinking age going up to 21? I've heard so many rumors about whats happening I'm confused...
I turned 18 a few months ago... and I know its like I'm saying don't raise the age because I'm 18 now... but really I don't see the point.
If anything it will create more problems, young people will still be able to buy alcohol and if anything anyone under 20's now will have nothing to do - which will create more people on the streets and stuff.
Plus its not fair to the majority of 18 year olds who can drink sensibly!
Your thoughts?
I've heard the rumour but I am really not sure if it is true - I am sure the media would have made quite a big deal about it if it was true.

Better not!
I have longer to wait then. :(
Yeah, I've heard this too. I think it's bad for the people 18-20 now, because we have had the pleasures of buying our own drink, going to clubs etc.. but we are gonna be stripped of it. I hope it doesn't happen

I think it's stupid they have to heighten the age limit because of a few drunk underaged kids. It the communities fault if they wish to sell alcohol to underagers. Teens and Adults have NOTHING to do with it.
I am fully against this for one reason. My current age is 20, and I have been drinking for aprox. 4 years. And I have been perfectly fine, but I don't overdo it with more drinking.

I've got mixed opinions on it. If underaged or on age drinkers drink too much, then they're punishment is pretty much the hangover afterwards.

I have heard many different rumors, 1 includes you can buy alcohol from shops or local pubs at the age of 18 but you have to be 21 to drink in nightclubs and pubs in town centres.

Well thats not happening in South Africa anytime soon so im pleased ;)
I just see it by raising the age wont make a difference. Its more about the teaching of alochol use and the damage it can do, and people being stricter with IDing people in shops so as not to sell it to kids as young as 14.
Just because they may look 18 doesn't mean they are. I mean it says on signs 'challenge 21' about how if you look under 21 you will be asked for ID, but most local shops don't care and just reckon if you look 18 you must be - thats the kinda thing people need to be thinking about not just lets be lazy and just raise the age, because it wont do anything.
At the end of the day by making the alcohol age 21 it wont change the way young people are drinking. Just stricter rules need to be put in place.

It will do nothing tbh, people will just get people over 21 to buy it for them rather than 18+

No, It's not. It would be more publicized if it was. It doesn't just happen overnight. And the government make plenty of money off student drinking.
Yep its true, but we went to pub today and my friend got ma other friends drinks, and they never said anything.. ( we are 16, he is 18)

Who doesnt drink, there's not a person on this forum who cannot say they have NEVER tasted alcohol because they have, it's in mouthwash and if you dont use mouthwash ur a tramp lololol, it's in some medicines too, but liek 99% of this forum must have had an alcopop or tin of beer, I can say I have

It already is where I live, so don't feel too bad.
Anyway, when they make laws like this, usually they put a 'cut-off' date, so anyone who could already drink under 21 would still be able to -- Just not people after that date.

I don't use mouthwash because it's disgusting and I find it too strong, so yes; I'm blatently a tramp.

Thats exactly what I have been saying too my friends who are worried about it.
If they do not do that, I will be pretty annoyed as I have just turned 18 and no I don't drink much just at parties and I will not be able to get any if the put the age up. :eusa_wall
Some pubs u gotta be 21 where i live and others you can be 18 but have to show ID

This has been dismissed, as an earlier post said. Also it would just increase drug problems, as people who are too young to get hold of drink go for drugs where (obviously) age doesn't matter whoever buys it.

Trying to come across as mature? Blew it mate...
I don't care really. Slight irritance, as I need to wait longer for a fake ID to pass for 21 than 18, but if I'm 'legally' buying drink I usually let my mum buy it from't shop.
