A Pacemaker is basically something that goes into your chest to ensure that the heart's beats at a consistent and adequate heart rate, it does this by sending out electrical impulses into the heart.

It shouldn't hurt in the long term.
As it is, in your heart there are 'control points' which send out electrical signals - the pace maker will simply override this and ensure your heart beats 'normally'.

Thing is signals can interfere with them. Well with lots of things. Just this minute it said in my Wii instruction manual that it can interfere with PaceMakers.

Krusty the clown has one on the Simpsons :P

It's keyhole surgery, you'll be awake and won't feel a thing.

There are a hundred types of heart problem. Yours is probobly different.

It's keyhole surgery, you'll be awake and won't feel a thing.

With heart keyhole, they normally just make very very small incisions in your shoulder and leg.

I think this should help with, in simple terms, what it is.

A pacemaker (or artificial pacemaker, so as not to be confused with the heart's natural pacemaker) is a medical device which uses electrical impulses, delivered by electrodes contacting the heart muscles, to regulate the beating of the heart. The primary purpose of a pacemaker is to maintain an adequate heart rate, either because the heart's native pacemaker is not fast enough, or there is a block in the heart's electrical conduction system. Modern pacemakers are externally programmable and allow the cardiologist to select the optimum pacing modes for individual patients. Some combine a pacemaker and implantable defibrillator in a single implantable device. Others have multiple electrodes stimulating differing positions within the heart to improve synchronisation of the lower chambers of the heart.
