How long does a contract sim card take to register?

As the title says, just want to know how long the sim card takes to register before you use the phone.

I signed up for an Orange contract this afternoon, at about 3, and the sim card does not seem ready to be used yet, as when I phone the new number it says the number has not been recognised.

Do I need to do something first?

If you got it from the shop they usually say upto 24 hours :)
Usually its on within 2 hours but you could always give them a call.

Stupid thing is I work in Carphone Warehouse, lol.

Only just started there though, and never had a contract before, so will probs just have to wait till work 2morrow :P

:O Surely carphone warehouse should have trained you up for all this before letting you loose in the store? unless your still training and being prepared to give us customers some high pressure selling :8

I bought mine online, I'm on O2 and it was already registered when I got it.
